Blue Streaks Lose Game 1 at Whittier; Game 2 Canceled

WHITTIER, Calif. – Poets and rain made for a gloomy day for John Carroll Softball.

The Whittier College Poets dealt the Blue Streaks an 11-3 loss in 5 innings in the opening of today's doubleheader before rain caused a cancellation of the second game.

So, at the midpoint of the team's California trip, the Blue Streaks stand at 1-3. Despite the record, positives are to be found from the first four contests, including the loss on Wednesday.

Melissa Smith's strong start is one such example. The sophomore smited two Poets, catching runners stealing in the first and second innings. Despite this, Whittier managed to sneak ahead in the opening frame, 1-0.

Despite a quick turnaround from last night's games, the Blue Streaks thundered in the third. Serena Paterno reached on an error to start the inning, and advanced to third on a Kaylyn Odelli double. Kendall Trunzo drew a 1-out walk to load the bases. Smith singled to score Paterno and tie the game. Just like yesterday, Gabby Hougan proved the hero, doubling down the line to score Smith and Trunzo.

JCU's 3-1 lead proved to be short lived, as the Poets tied the game in the third. But Whittier did the most damage in the fourth inning, scoring 5 runs on 6 hits to take full control of the ballgame, 8-3.

The Blue Streaks attempted to respond in the fifth, but came up empty. Odelli, Smith, and Crespo drew walks to load the bases with two outs. But the Poets coaxed an inning-ending groundout to stop the threat.

The contest concluded in the bottom of the frame, as the Poets scratched across a few runs to end the game at 11-3. Kristin Dems accepted the loss.

The Blue Streaks will enjoy an offday on Thursday before getting back to action on Friday. John Carroll will head to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for a doubleheader with the Athenas starting at 5 pm Eastern/2 pm Pacific.
