Softball Struggles in Loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Weather played a factor again for John Carroll Softball on Friday.

Field conditions pushed back the start time vs. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, and then forced the second game to be called off.

The one game that was played did not go in the Blue Streaks' favor, as JCU surrendered a 6-0 defeat to the Athenas.

The key to the contest was the Athenas' pitching. Five CMS pitchers combined to no-hit the Blue Streaks.

The Athenas fired out to a hot start in the first inning with a 2-out, 2-run single. CMS added an unearned run in the second for a 3-0 lead. The Athenas notched three more runs in the third frame, which would be all CMS needed.

The Blue & Gold did threaten in the fifth inning. Gabby Hougan and Elaina Rodriguez drew walks, and Lexie Genovese was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. But the Athenas coaxed a strikeout and a flyout to escape the jam unharmed.

Danielle Orendi was charged with the loss. Emily Graves supplied 2.2 innings of perfect relief, striking out two batters.

John Carroll will close out the California trip on Saturday, facing the University of Redlands in a doubleheader starting at 2 pm ET/11 am PT.
