Bats Come Alive as Softball Wins Second Game at La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – After a quiet start at the dish in the first couple games, John Carroll Softball came alive today.

The Blue Streaks split with the La Verne Leopards in the second day of the California trip, losing the opener, 9-1, before roaring for an 11-7 win in the second.

The defining story of the day was excellent efforts by the team's veterans.

Game 1
John Carroll got some momentum in the first inning, getting two aboard with one out thanks to a Kendall Trunzo single and an Isa Crespo hit by pitch. But the Leopards shut the door and quickly went to work on making their own music. La Verne tallied three hits, and aided by an error, took a 2-0 lead.

An Elaina Rodriguez double followed by an Emily Graves single provided the firepower needed to get the Blue Streaks on the board in the second.

Danielle Orendi settled in, providing scoreless innings in the second and third. The senior then allowed a pair of one-hit singles in the fourth, so the Blue Streaks' bullpen got going. On Emily Graves' first batter, an error occurred on an attempted sacrifice bunt. The Leopards took advantage, going on to score six runs in the inning, four unearned.

La Verne managed to scratch across one more run in the fifth, taking the 9-1 win.

Game 2
After a tough first couple games, the John Carroll bats awakened in the first inning. Kaylyn Odelli singled right up the middle past the pitcher to start things off. A hard-hit Kendall Trunzo single to left center set two ducks on the pond. Gabby Hougan clubbed a double to the wall, scoring both runners. And the next batter, Elaina Rodriguez hit a double to the left-center gap that bounced to the wall, allowing for Hougan to score.

La Verne responded with a couple runs in the bottom of the frame, aided by an error, so one of the runs was unearned. The Leopards added four more tallies in the next inning. After loading the bases with one out, La Verne drew an RBI walk and then hit a bases-clearing double to take a 6-3 lead.

A leadoff homer in the third by Melissa Smith over the wall in left center narrowed the deficit, and also marked the first home run of the year by JCU. But the Leopards did manage to get one across in the fourth to get back to a 3-run lead.

Enter Gabby Hougan.

Trunzo kickstarted the fifth with a nice infield single. Smith soon walked, setting two runners aboard for Hougan. The senior from Springboro delivered a no doubter dinger over the left field wall, making perfect contact that created a wonderful sound to tie the game at seven apiece.

Hougan's heroics sparked the Blue Streaks, as the go-ahead runs followed in the sixth. Graves walked and Odelli singled to open things, and Trunzo singled just past the pitcher's outstretched glove up the middle to plate Graves. Crespo knocked a marvelous ball to left, scoring Odelli.

And the bats weren't done just yet!

Emily Graves walked and Kaylyn Odelli reached via an error with two outs. Kendall Trunzo then hustled out a single to plate Graves, and then Odelli raced around to score in a display of smart baserunning.

With four insurance runs, Casey Cash cruised. A diving play by Trunzo on the first out of the seventh helped for sure. Cash put together a strong outing with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, the longest outing of her college career and her second career win.

Hougan finished with an impressive statline, going 2-for-4 with a massive 5 RBIs. Trunzo looked excellent at the plate, hitting 4-for-5 with 2 RBIs. Odelli not only went 2-for-5 but scored 3 runs. Rodriguez also finished with a pair of hits.
