Blue Streaks Fall To Concordia Chicago In Back-And-Forth Contest

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Playing on its third day of the annual Florida trip, the John Carroll baseball team dropped a tough game to Concordia Chicago in the first-ever meeting between the schools, 11-8, in a nine-inning contest at Lake Myrtle Park.

The first inning started off with a bang for the Blue Streaks, as Erik Daugenti mashed a three-run homer to right centerfield to take an early 3-0 lead.

Just as JCU started to heat up, the Cougars put their first three batters on and Michael Kasik doubled to left field to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3. Concordia proceeded to pour in more runs two batters later on an RBI single to take the lead, 4-3. Concordia tacked on three additional scores for a seven-run frame.

JCU roared back in the second, getting two runners on for Bryce Holt who hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to three. Two batters later, Connor Mayle hit a sacrifice fly to score Michael Persichetti, and Holt later touched home on a wild pitch to make it 7-6.

The game settled down until the fourth inning when Holt smashed a two-run shot to right field to take the lead back, 8-7.

Concordia would knot the game 8-8 on a groundout in the sixth and take the advantage for good in the seventh with a three-run homer by Tyler Dorsch.

The Blue Streaks could not muster any more offense, as they had just two baserunners the rest of the contest.

The Cougars outhit JCU, 12-6, with Holt and Daugenti each recording two hits and three RBIs. Alex Wu got the start on the hill and was replaced by Roger Simon in the first inning, who surrendered just four hits and two walks in three frames of work. Sylvan Wiley and Henry Darrow also saw time, each recording three strikeouts.

John Carroll will return to action at Lake Myrtle Park on Thursday, March 7 as they will play a twin bill with Concordia (MN) beginning at 9:30 a.m.
