Women's Lacrosse Loses Spring Break Opener to DeSales

SEWANEE, TN – The first game of spring break played out much differently than the first few games of the year in Northeast Ohio.

While the last few games were defined by high offensive outputs, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse played a defensive battle on Monday afternoon in a neutral game at Sewanee: The University of the South, located about an hour and a half south of Nashville.

The Blue Streaks' offense endured a cold spell and thus dropped a 10-6 loss to DeSales University.

The Bulldogs – hailing from Southeastern Pennsylvania – fired out to a hot start. DeSales roared for three straight goals in the opening six minutes. Shaking off the rust, the Blue Streaks soon provided a response.

Just 20 seconds after the Bulldogs' third tally, JCU got on the board, with Riley Knapp scoring a woman-up goal. Later in the period, Knapp setup Kathleen Cagney to cut the deficit to one. DeSales responded with a marker, but a buzzer-beater by Kendall Gessner cut it to 4-3 after the first.

The second quarter belonged to Olivia Hanulak. The Pine-Richland grad rocketed home back-to-back goals to get JCU the lead for the first time at the 6:47 mark. DeSales managed a goal four minutes later, but the score stood deadlocked at five apiece at half, anybody's game.

The offensive attack came to a halt for John Carroll in the second half. It was not for a lack of trying, as JCU played a clean game, clearing the ball well, and not turning the ball over a ton. Most statistical categories were even.

The Bulldogs just seemed to be the better finishers, finding twine twice in the third quarter and three times in the fourth quarter to take full control of the game.

With 4:37 left, Anna Spitzer got JCU off the schneid, wasting little time in ripping home a free-position goal to trim the margin to 10-6.

But the offense couldn't muster more goals for a comeback, dropping to 1-3 on the young season.

Hanulak led the offense with two goals, while Gessner grabbed a team-high 4 groundballs. Hannah Weiss, Meghan Weiner, and Anna Spitzler all nabbed 4 groundballs. JCU finished 19-of-21 on clears, hitting 90% for the second time in four games.

John Carroll will look to bounce back on Thursday, facing host Sewanee at 5 pm Eastern/4 pm Central.
