Late Oxy Surge Sinks Blue Streaks in Los Angeles Opener

LOS ANGELES — After years of traveling to Florida, John Carroll Softball is switching it up this year to the City of Angels for a fun change of scenery.

The dry heat of Los Angeles welcomes the Blue Streaks for nine games in six games, the first of which was played today at Occidental College.

A late scoring spree by the host Tigers led to a season-opening loss for JCU, 4-0.

After a JCU 1-2-3 frame to start the season, ace Danielle Orendi took the circle for the Blue Streaks. The senior allowed a walk to open things off, but Melissa Smith quickly caught the Tiger stealing. In the second, Gabby Hougan and Lexie Genovese wisely drew walks but were stranded. Hougan also got hit by a pitch in her next at bat.

Meanwhile, Orendi found a groove and retired six straight Tigers in the third and fourth. Kaylyn Odelli looked poised to deliver run support, with JCU's first hit followed by a stolen base.

Kristin Dems relieved her in the fifth after a near flawless 4-inning start for Orendi. After walking her first batter, Dems dove in and retired the next three batters, leaving a runner at third. The sixth spelled trouble for the freshman, however, with an Oxy single, hit by pitch, and bunt single loading the bases with no outs. A throw from second to home for a forceout skittered away from the catcher, and a couple runs crossed. A wild pitch and sacrifice fly plated the last two runs.

JCU did not surrender, getting runners aboard with a few walks. But the hosts shut the door on a comeback and kept JCU off the board.

The two teams combined for four hits in a pitchers' duel. JCU left seven runners stranded.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Tuesday vs. La Verne in a doubleheader beginning at 6 pm Eastern/3 pm Pacific.
