Softball Swept by Strong Waynesburg Squad

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Runs were at a premium at Bracken Field on Saturday afternoon for John Carroll Softball's home opener.

John Carroll and Waynesburg combined for only nine runs in two games.

The Blue Streaks fell 3-1 in the first game of the doubleheader before falling 4-0 in the second game to a Yellow Jackets team that won the Presidents Athletic Conference and made the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

Game 1
It was a pitching duel between Danielle Orendi and Autumn Stemple.

Orendi suffered a tough-luck loss after she hurled seven innings of three-run ball. She struck out eight batters, which tied her career high, and only walked one.

The one crucial mistake came when she surrendered a two-run home run to Sydney Waryanka in the fourth inning. It gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead that they would hold onto for the win.

Stemple was far from flawless, but she got crucial outs when needed. She walked four batters while striking out seven in six and a third innings.

The Blue Streaks finally made some noise in their last at-bats as they entered the home half of the seventh down 3-0. Kendall Trunzo led off the inning with a double. It marked only the second runner John Carroll had put into scoring position. Gabby Hougan, the team's leader in RBIs, ripped a double down the left-field line that allowed Trunzo to score from second.

Stemple calmed things down by getting Melissa Smith to fly out to left. However, she reignited the hope for a comeback by walking Elaina Rodriguez. Sydney Wilson was then brought into the game to relieve Stemple.

Wilson entered the game and immediately nailed down the save with two quick outs.

Game 2
In the second game, the Yellow Jackets struck first once again. Trinity Edge capped off a three-run first inning with a two-run shot that cleared the wall in left-center field.

The Blue Streaks stranded four runners on base over the first two innings, still unable to come through with a timely base hit.

The bats then fell silent for both sides until the top of the sixth inning, where the Yellow Jackets tacked on another run. Casey Cash prevented any further damage by forcing Grace Higgins to ground out to short.

There was no comeback attempt this time for the Blue Streaks. Wilson gave up a lead off single in the seventh, but then set the Blue Streaks down in order.

Wilson had a complete game shutout in Game 2. She gave up six hits, walked two, and struck out three.

Cash threw two and two-thirds innings of relief. She only gave up one run on six hits.

Up Next
Next up for JCU Softball is a road trip to Allegheny College on Wednesday, March 20, where they will play a pair against the Gators.

The Blue Streaks will return to Bracken Field next Sunday for a single game against Alma College. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
