Bats Remain Cold, as Softball Swept by Penn State Behrend

ERIE, Penn. – Amidst a chilly spring, the John Carroll bats have struggled to warm up.

The Blue Streaks headed to Mercyhurst Softball Field on Thursday to confront the Penn State Behrend Lions, and unfortunately return home with a pair of defeats.

John Carroll Softball experienced a 3-0 setback in Game 1 and a 4-0 defeat in Game 2.

Game 1
Returning from a 12-day break between games due to weather, JCU's bats were quiet in the early going. The Lions carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, before Laney Karpowicz broke it up with a bunt single.

Penn State Behrend got on the board in the third with a pair of runs, which would be all they'd need. An RBI bunt single got the first run across, and a fielder's choice got the second run in.

The Lions fired up a brief 2-out rally in the sixth, with the Lions following up a double down the right field line with a single through the left side to make the score 3-0. Melissa Smith didn't surrender in the seventh, singling down the left field line, but JCU couldn't mount a comeback.

Danielle Orendi allowed 12 hits, but had a strong outing overall. The veteran stranded eight Lions to limit damage, all while striking out five.

Game 2
After a quiet first couple innings, the Lions broke through in the third. Penn State Behrend tallied five hits and did some damage, plating three runs to take command of the game.

Kristin Dems relieved Casey Cash in the fourth frame and looked dynamic. The freshman struck out the side in the sixth, helping to keep things within reach. She did admit one run in the seventh, but only allowed two hits in four innings of work.

JCU got a base runner to third in the opening frame, as Kaylyn Odelli walked, then advanced to third on a wild pitch followed by a sacrifice bunt. But she was stranded. The sophomore met a similar fate in the sixth after drawing another walk.

The Blue Streaks finished without a hit in the defeat.
