Women's Soccer Harpoons Fighting Muskies in Offensive Outburst

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – It was a feeding frenzy at Don Shula Stadium today.

Both the Blue Streaks and Fighting Muskies showcased a hunger for goals, providing a myriad of highlights in the first Ohio Athletic Conference game of the season for both teams.

John Carroll created a couple more fun moments than Muskingum, and walked away with a 5-3 victory.

The match opened with Muskingum finding some footing on offense, with a couple early chances though nothing too bad. John Carroll also looked to put in some chances but there was nothing too promising.

Rosado steered the offenses with some chances, including a nice opportunity in the 26th minute off a centering pass to Emma West. Soon enough, West got her assist.

In the 27th minute, the Avon Lake native slotted a marvelous pass to a charging Emily Patrzyk. The junior left-footed a fantastic shot low left for the game's first tally.

The floodgates opened from there.

In the 39th minute, Kate Norkin charged in taking a great pass ahead from Lucy Kuerbis. Norkin fired a shot off the goalie, who made a great save but could not corral it. The ball bounced back near the net, and the visitors made a frantic attempt to clear. Staying with it, Norkin dashed in and managed to finish her work for her first collegiate goal.

Less than two minutes later, John Carroll struck once ahead. Kathryn Shaffer blasted an amazingly long and accurate through ball to Taylor Kuhn from deep in the JCU end past midfield. Kuhn sprinted ahead and got in all alone with the keeper. Her first shot glanced off the post, but she calmly slotted home the rebound.

The craziness continued, as a quick JCU turnover led to a Muskingum goal. However, the JCU response was swift and true less than a minute later.

On a JCU corner kick into the box, Muskingum tried to head the ball out of harm's way. Lucy Altieri had other ideas, heading home her second goal of the campaign. It was certainly a nice way to celebrate her birthday.

And so after the teams combined for four goals in the final seven minutes of the half, JCU fully in control, 4-1.

Madison Skeese got the nod in net for the start of the second half. Though John Carroll enjoyed several promising opportunities, it was the Muskies who struck next. Gracie McNeal did the honors, slimming the separation to two goals.

In the 69th minute, John Carroll fans took a sigh of relief as any comeback hopes were silenced. Working from left to right, Bella Carcelli sent a pass to Emma West, who found Norkin. Despite a tough angle, the Dublin, Ohio native lofted a great shot over the keeper's head for a 5-2 lead.

Interestingly enough, West has had two multi-assist games in her John Carroll career, and both have occurred against the Fighting Muskies.

Muskingum finished off the scoring late in the match with a tally in the 77th minute, but the Fighting Muskies were not going to relent, finding twine one last time to conclude a wild match.

"It feels great, the whole team had so much energy going into it, and we worked so hard to get those five goals," said Altieri. "Everyone is out to get us this year, but we're looking to keep our title. We're looking to carry the same energy from this game [into Mount Union], and hopefully keep scoring goals while playing strong defensively."
