Women's Soccer Glides Past Purple Raiders in Home Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Early offense has become a theme for John Carroll Women's Soccer lately.

The Blue Streaks have scored two-plus goals in the first half in each of the last four matches, tonight's being perhaps being the most important.

Thanks to a trio of goals in the opening 18 minutes, John Carroll whopped Mount Union in a rivalry victory at home, 3-0.

In the final regular-season meeting between the two programs as Ohio Athletic Conference foes, John Carroll didn't need much motivation. Right out of the gates, the hosts were the aggressors.

Case in point, just three minutes and 31 seconds into the contest, the Blue Streaks made an aggressive play to break the game open. Madyson Rosado pounced on a Purple Raider defender who made a touch backwards. The North Ridgeville native quickly found herself in a one-on-one with the goal. And as usual, Rosado didn't miss, sweeping it by the keeper for the early advantage.

Just three minutes later, the Blue Streaks proved it wasn't a fluke. Off an Abby Smith throw-in on the far side, Emily Patrzyk took a couple touches and placed it on the far hashmark to Rosado. The senior accepted the ball with her back to the defender, spun to her right to beat the Raider, skated by another Raider, and then fired it home past the keeper low left to the 2-0 advantage.

Rosado's two goals marks the third multi-goal game of her career, and propels her into the top-10 for career goals with 25.

The hosts didn't stop there. In the 18th minute, the Blue Streaks won a 50/50 ball, as Emma West possessed a bouncer off a Raider. West quickly flipped the ball ahead to Meredith Coloian ahead of a couple Raiders. The Avon native charged ahead and cut towards the middle of the field, drawing the keeper out and putting the ball perfectly low-right with her right foot to beat the netminder.

The Purple Raiders did place a couple shots on Madeline Martin later in the first half, but could not gain any consistent traction. John Carroll dominated the possession and headed into the half with a 3-0 lead.

The second half proved to be fairly quiet, at least in comparison to the opening 45 minutes. Each team got some chances, but nothing overwhelming. As the clock ticked and ticked, the lead felt insurmountable.

And indeed, it was, as JCU outshot Mount Union in the second half, 7-6. However, to their credit, the Raiders did keep the margin at three. The visitors made six saves to prevent a repeat of last year's 4-0 result.

"I'm proud of the way we started the game," said Head Coach Michael Marich. "The energy out of the gates was fantastic. This is a great home conference win. We hope to build off this win and continue improving over the course of conference play."

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will hit the road this Saturday, heading to Bexley, Ohio. John Carroll will confront Capital in a 1 pm match, a strong test, as the teams tied last year – the Comets were the only OAC team that JCU did not beat last year.
