Women's Soccer Conquers Quakers in Nice Home Win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The shutout streak ended, but all that matters is that the winning streak continues.

John Carroll Women's Soccer continued rolling in Ohio Athletic Conference play, picking up the team's seventh straight conquest.

The Blue Streaks bested Wilmington College at Don Shula Stadium on a sunny Saturday fall afternoon, 2-1, advancing to 7-0 in conference play, 11-5 overall.

After testing the Quakers in the early going, the Blue Streaks broke through early on, just like the last meeting vs. Wilmington a year ago. Last year, the opening goal occurred in the seventh minute. This year, JCU scored in the eighth minute.

Madyson Rosado put a shot on, and Meredith Coloian grabbed the rebound. The Avon native passed it to Emma West back post, and the Avon Lake native did the rest. West found twine for her fourth goal of the season, eighth of her career.

The Quakers poked and prodded at the JCU defenses, hoping to respond. While JCU tallied a couple chances, Wilmington seemed to enjoy the more promising chances over the course of the first stanza.

With just a few minutes left in the first half, Kathryn Shaffer made a fantastic play to turn away a Wilmington opportunity. The veteran's smart play, combined with Madeline Martin's excellent directing from her goalkeeper spot, helped to keep the Quakers off the board despite outshooting JCU, 11-9.

The Blue Streaks possessed the ball better in the second half, building up for some chances. Rosado and Co. continued to test the Wilmington backline.

In the 64th minute, the pressure worked.

On a goalkick, the Wilmington keeper sent a pass to the right back. The Wilmington defender took too big of a touch, and Rosado was waiting. The North Ridgeville native swooped in and with one touch, the ball was in the back of the net.

The opportunistic goal gave John Carroll what would be a critical insurance marker.

"We were pressing high on them," Rosado noted. "One of their defenders made a mistake and I just followed in on it and capitalized on it. It felt really good getting up 2-0."

Physicality marked much of the remainder of the game. Lucy Altieri did a particularly good job of fending off the Quakers and setting the tone. The defense continued to bring the boom.

Late in the contest, with just under two minutes, Wilmington's work paid off. The Quakers placed a shot on net that Martin could not corral.

While the shutout was lost, it did not take away from what was a great effort by Martin. The sophomore, a two-time reigning OAC Athlete of the Week, notched three saves and directed the defense well. The defense has been incredible during conference play, with Martin of course playing a critical role and the defenders in front of her doing a phenomenal job, too.

JCU has two conference games remaining, taking a seven-game win streak into the home stretch.

"This team is such a family. Regardless of what happened pre-conference, we came together and decided to put it all out there," said Rosado. "Since the start of conference play, we've done whatever we could do to win. We've been gritty in finding goals. We always work hard to get the win, that's what I love about us. Every win is a team win, I love it."

Next Up
The Blue Streaks' tough stretch to end the regular season continues on Wednesday. JCU will take a trip to Otterbein for a showdown with the Cardinals, who currently occupy the fourth spot in the standings with a 3-2-2 mark.
