Women's Soccer Battles to First Draw of the Season, Tying Otterbein

WESTERVILLE – While John Carroll Women's Soccer got on the board early, Otterbein controlled the contest from there on out.

But the Blue Streaks battled for a 1-1 tie, preserving an unbeaten conference record.

Following tonight's draw with Otterbein, John Carroll carries a 7-0-1 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference play heading into the regular season finale with Ohio Northern (7-1) with the conference crown on the line.

The Blue Streaks started the scoring early, as they love to do. Abby Smith found space on the right wing in the ninth minute, and played in a fantastic ball. Her lofted ball drew out the keeper, who clawed at it with her gloves but could not possess it. Emma West waited in the perfect spot, and immediately right footed it off a bounce into the net.

The tally marked West's fifth goal of the season, and her second straight game finding twine in the first nine minutes. JCU has now scored three goals in conference play during the first 10 minutes of the match. JCU is outscoring OAC foes in the first half this season, 13-1.

While the Blue Streaks enjoyed the early lead, the Cardinals' offense did not simply give in. Otterbein peppered the Blue & Gold with shots, as Madeline Martin made four saves in the first half.

Otterbein outshot JCU, 11-5, in the opening frame. The persistence broke through early on in the second half.

Not five minutes into the second stanza, Otterbein's efforts paid off with a game-tying goal in the 50th minute. Rae Ehrbar did the trick to set the stage for a battle down the stretch. But besides this one, Martin stood tall in the crease.

The Cardinals missed a dangerous chance in the 71st minute, clanging a shot over Martin off the post. Thankfully Martin made a follow up save shortly after to keep it even. The Cardinals continued to test JCU down the stretch, as Martin hopped up to make a nice save in the 78th minute.

Otterbein continued to be on the offensive late, though JCU sent a couple shots wide in the final minutes.

For the match, the Cardinals outshot JCU, 25-10, including 13-5 on goal. Madeline Martin's 12 saves tied her season high.
