Volleyball Bested In Marietta In Saturday Road Showdown

MARIETTA, Ohio — The John Carroll Women's Volleyball team faced a hard-fought matchup against #11 ranked Marietta College at the Ban Johnson Arena in a highly anticipated OAC contest. Although the Blue Streaks ultimately lost in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-20), it was a competitive match nonetheless.

This loss brings the Blue Streaks' overall record to 14-6 and 3-2 in OAC play, while the Pioneers of Marietta continue their unbeaten start to the season, improving their record to 17-0 and 5-0 in conference play.

The first set featured a back-and-forth score from the outset, with the Pioneers jumping out to an early 4-3 lead. The Blue Streaks quickly responded, surging ahead with multiple-point runs to seize control of the match at 17-9. Key contributions from  Jessica Liddle's blocks, Hailey Williams' kills, and a service ace by Natalie Glowe fueled this run. However, the Pioneers rallied, narrowing the deficit to just 4 points at 22-19. Another kill by Williams brought the score to 23-19, but that would be the last point the Blue Streaks would score in the set. Marietta then executed a decisive 6-point run to clinch the first set, 25-23.

In the second set, John Carroll initially took a 6-3 lead, thanks to early kills from Glowe. The Pioneers quickly responded, tying the game at 7. Both teams traded kills and intense rallies until the Blue Streaks found themselves trailing by 2 points at 14-12. Graduate student Abby Bednar  led the Blue Streaks in scoring during this competitive series with timely kills. However, the Blue Streaks struggled in scoring, trading two or more points to the Pioneers for each of their own until the score was out of reach. The Pioneers maintained at least a 5-point cushion for the remainder of the set, ultimately winning 25-17.

The Blue Streaks proved resilient, trading points with the Pioneers in the early stages of the third set before taking a 9-4 lead, fueled by timely kills from Kendra Dziubinksi and Mary Kate Sheehan. Following a quick timeout by the Pioneers, they mounted a comeback, cutting the lead to 9-8 after a 4-point swing. The teams continued to exchange points until the Blue Streaks held a narrow 16-15 lead. At that point, the Pioneers made their move, scoring four consecutive points to take the lead at 19-16. They never relinquished that advantage, with the Blue Streaks trailing by three points at 23-20 until the Pioneers closed out the set 25-20 with a decisive kill and a service ace.

Williams and Bednar led the team with 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Freshman Tess Humphrey directed the offense with 16 assists, while her classmate Olivia Mogyordy anchored the defense with 13 digs.
