Volleyball Wins in Tiffin for the First Time Since 2014, Beating Berg in 5 Sets

TIFFIN, Ohio – Over the past two decades, Heidelberg has been a thorn in the side of John Carroll Volleyball.

Entering today's match, since 2004, the Student Princes enjoyed a 20-3 mark against the Blue Streaks. Jason Miller's program has enjoyed plenty of success during that span, with five conference crowns and eight NCAA appearances. But in the final match at Ohio Athletic Conference foes, Michele Benoit's Streaks enjoyed the last laugh.

In a five-set war, the Blue Streaks conquered the Student Princes, 3-2. The victory marked JCU's first vs. the Berg since 2019 and first in Tiffin since 2014.

John Carroll stormed out to a 9-5 lead to start the contest, though the Student Princes managed to tie it shortly thereafter. The teams traded jabs, with JCU's lead growing to three points at one juncture, but then shrinking back to 21-20. Thanks to a couple Mary Kate Sheehan kills, the Blue Streaks closed things out with authority to the tune of a 25-23 opening victory.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair with the teams trading points to tie the score again and again. But down the stretch, the Student Princes took control, with a 5-1 run to snag the set, 25-21. Attack errors hindered both teams, but Berg squeezed out points late when needed.

In a similar fashion to the second, the third stanza's opening was quite even. But after an Abby Bednar kill gave JCU the lead at 13-12, and the Blue Streaks never again trailed. The lead stretched to five on a couple occasions, but Heidleberg stayed close throughout. Trailing 23-19, Berg called a timeout and promptly tabbed three kills in a row. But then two Bednar kills helped finish it off at 25-23.

John Carroll burst out of the gates in the fourth, firing out to a 10-5 lead. But Heidelberg gradually chipped away at the deficit, all the way to a 19-19 deadlock, leading to a JCU timeout. A 5-1 Student Princes run threatened to end the set, but then JCU staved off the loss with kills by Hailey Williams and Jessica Liddle. JCU looked to end things, leading 28-27, but then the Berg tallied three straight to steal it, 30-28.

In the tiebreaking set, JCU started fast to the tune of a 4-1 lead, so Berg called a timeout. The hosts fought back to an 8-7 JCU lead, but from there, the visitors took command. Three Kendra Dziubinski kills powered a 6-1 JCU run to a 13-7 advantage. Heidelberg did not surrender, but a soft Williams kill over the Berg block cemented the 15-10 clincher.

Abby Bednar led the offense with 17 kills and a .389 hitting percentage. Natalie Glowe also shined with 15 kills. Tess Humphrey contributed 28 assists followed closely by Haley Nicholson with 25. Olivia Mogyordy topped the team with 24 digs.
