Men's Basketball Rocks Comets on the Road

BEXLEY, Ohio -- The #7 ranked Blue Streaks traveled to Bexley, Ohio to take on the Capital Comets in their first road Ohio Athletic Conference game of the new year.

The game started fast with the two teams answering each others' scores, but a very hot second half from the Blue Streaks led to an 86-66 victory for John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks improve to 6-0 in OAC play entering a big home matchup with #14 Mount Union on Wednesday.

The first score came quickly in this game. After JCU missed a three-pointer, Luke Frazier came down with the rebound and put it right back up. Capital would respond with a deep triple to give themselves what would be their only lead of the game. Luke Frazier replied with a layup 13 seconds later, and from there on, the Blue Streaks seemed to be in control. After a Luka Eller made a three-pointer (his first of the year) and a Frazier dunk, the Blue and Gold were up 14-7 and seemed to have all the momentum.

Capital was able to slow the game down a bit and the two teams began trading scores. After a Capital free throw, the score would stand at 24-17 halfway through the opening frame. The two teams began to trade scores again, but this time Capital was slowly gaining momentum and inching closer. The Comets managed to tie the game up at 35 apiece with 2:32 remaining in the half. But thanks in part to a Chase Toppin step back three, the Blue Streaks ended the half on a 7-2 run, standing ahead 42-37.

The second half was all John Carroll. After a chase down block by Frazier, the Streaks looked like a completely new team, going on a 14-5 run to take a 56-42 lead just five minutes into the half. The scoring didn't stop there, as the Blue Streaks would go on another 12-2 run thanks to scores from Luke Chicone, Luka Eller, and David Gentry to take a 68-44 lead halfway through the second half.

"I feel we were tiring them out and playing at the pace where we play best," said Luke Frazier of the Blue Streaks' hot second-half start.

After being down as much as 25 points the Comets managed to control the bleeding and prevent the lead from getting any bigger. They spent the last 6 minutes of the game trading scores with the Blue and Gold.

The Blue Streaks leave Bexley with a 20-point win as well as a 6-0 conference record

"It's obviously very nice, however, we are more focused on getting better each and every day. Proud of the mindset our guys came with today," said Head Coach Pete Moran '08 of his team's effort today as well as the importance of starting out 6-0 in a tough conference like the OAC.

John Carroll put up a strong scoring effort, as the team shot 52.3% from the field as well as 70.6% from the FT line. The Blue Streaks got some great bench support, tallying 26 bench points.

The Men of Carroll also excelled on the defensive side of the floor, managing to hold the Comets to just 20% shooting from behind the three-point line and forcing 16 turnovers. The Blue Streaks also won the rebounding battle 36-32.

Luke Frazier led all scorers with 22 points. Luka Eller, Henry Raynor, Chase Toppin, and Jerry Higgins III each added 10 of their own.

The Blue Streaks return home this Wednesday, January 10 for a home conference showdown vs. #14 Mount Union. Tip-off is set for 7 pm in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
