Blue Streaks Handle Heidelberg in Home Conquest

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – After a close first quarter at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, the Blue Streaks took control against the Student Princes of Heidelberg University and never looked back.

After firing ahead in the second quarter, John Carroll Women's Basketball preserved the lead till the end of the game.

The Blue Streaks finished with a 72-51 victory, advancing to 10-8 on the year.

Throughout the first quarter, the defenses for both John Carroll and Heidelberg slowed all scoring attempts. Ava Ryncarz responded to the Student Princes' offensive drive by earning three defensive rebounds. Ryncarz also moved the needle on the offensive side by leading the team in points and shooting 100% at the free throw line. Despite the extensive efforts from the Blue Streaks, the quarter ended with a score of 14-14.

The Blue Streaks turned up the energy moving into the second quarter and outscored the Student Princes by 15 points. Leading the charge was Bella Carcippolo with five points and one offensive rebound. Right behind her with four points each was Maddie Pietrowski and Ava Ryncarz.

With a solid defensive showing, the Blue Streaks managed to keep the Student Princes to only seven points. Two steals each from Halle Landies and Carmen Heuker enabled John Carroll to constantly maintain possession of the ball. By the end of the second quarter, the Blue Streaks were ahead with a score of 36-21.

In the third quarter, sophomore Bella Carcioppolo dominated on all fronts with six points, a steal and a block. Following closely behind with five points and an assist was Ava Ryncarz. Abigail Rosol stepped up on defense for the Blue Streaks with three blocks and two rebounds against Heidelberg. Rosol also tallied four offensive points throughout the third quarter as well. Maddie Pietrowski also limited Heidelberg's second shot chances by bringing in three rebounds of her own.

Despite a late spark from Heidelberg in the third, John Carroll was able to keep hold of the lead and end the quarter with a score of 55-37.

Advancing into the fourth quarter, John Carroll's freshman pushed the offense forward. Quinn Benchley and Olivia Donnelly scored just over half of the teams combined 17 points in the quarter.

On the defensive side of the ball, Katie Zatta and Lily Metzger each grabbed two rebounds for the Blue Streaks. Paired with the strong offensive push and a strong presence under the net, John Carroll was able to close the game with a score of 72-51.

Bella Carcioppolo led the team with a game-high 17 points on the night, adding 4 rebounds. Ava Ryncarz got to double figures with 13 points.

Freshman Olivia Donnelly made her way into the statline tonight, scoring her first collegiate points. Donnelly finished the night with 6 points and a defensive rebound.

"In practice, we've focused more on playing together so that I could bring my strongsuits out and just find more confidence in my teammates, as well as myself," said Donnelly. "I hope to bring more energy, keep the team's confidence up, play together and have fun, which is most important."

This weekend, the Blue Streaks will travel to New Concord to play the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University.
