Women's Soccer Opens OAC Play with Homecoming Victory over Wilmington

Patrzyk's Goal Caps off Homecoming Festivities with First OAC Win of the Season

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Homecoming Weekend at John Carroll never fails to deliver an electric environment for alumni, students, parents, and fans.

From the early morning tailgates until the final whistle in the Blue Streaks' win over Wilmington in the women's soccer match, the John Carroll campus was alive.

Blue Streaks athletics went undefeated across the board on Saturday. The football, volleyball, and soccer teams prevailed over Wilmington with football and women's soccer securing home victories.

The defining moment in the women's soccer victory over the 7-1 Wilmington Quakers came before the tardy members of the Blue Streak faithful had even reclined into their seats at Don Shula Stadium.

The early minutes of the Blue Streaks' soccer matches this season have not yielded many goals, as they spend time feeling out their opponent. However, the Blue Streaks flipped the script on the Quakers in their first match of Ohio Athletic Conference play and grabbed an early 1-0 lead in just the seventh minute of the contest.

Abby Smith set things into motion when she launched a center ball which Madyson Rosado then sent toward the goal with a header. Wilmington goalkeeper Heidi Toner deflected the ball, causing it to lazily roll out in front of the goal.

Emily Patrzyk took full advantage and buried her team-high fifth goal of the season in the bottom right corner of the net.

After the early theatrics by John Carroll, the two OAC foes settled in on the pitch. Only a handful of shots were taken in the next 38 minutes of the half and the score at halftime remained 1-0 in favor of the Blue Streaks.

The Blue Streaks tallied four shots on goal to just two by the Quakers.

In the 50th minute of the second half, Madeline Martin Koiser notched a tremendous save. Haley Fulton sent a missile flying towards the top third of the net and Koiser leaped into the air and knocked the ball away. At the time, it was the freshman keeper's third save of the match.

The final 40 minutes quietly rolled off the clock with only a combined three shots on goal in the second half. The Blue Streaks ultimately needed just one goal to get the job done against the Quakers which can be credited in part to another strong showing from Martin-Koiser.

The Huntsburg native already has three shut performances, including one in each of the past two matches.

"It's good to be getting shutout wins early in my John Carroll career and for me to get one in my first OAC matchup means a lot," said Koiser postgame. "Although I can take some credit, I give a ton of it to my defenders and midfielders to hold down the line for the full 90 minutes."

John Carroll treks deeper into OAC play on Wednesday night in Heidelberg at 7 p.m. The Blue Streaks will board the bus to Tiffin riding an eight-match unbeaten streak.
