Women's Soccer Notches Road Win at Heidelberg on Wednesday Afternoon

TIFFIN, Ohio – In a rare Wednesday afternoon soccer match, John Carroll Women's Soccer got the task completed.

The Blue Streaks allowed a late goal at Heidelberg, but still walked away the victors of a 2-1 match over the Student Princes.

With the victory, the Blue Streaks advance to 6-1-3 on the year and stay undefeated in Ohio Athletic Conference play at 2-0.

The visitors needed no time to shake off rust from the bus trip, as Abby Smith tallied the first shot on goal of the game within the first minute. The Blue Streaks continued to apply pressure with shots, though the hosts started to get some chances about a third of the way through the opening frame.

Following more pressure from JCU, the Student Princes caved in the 29th minute. After a Sara Gennuso shot was blocked, Emily Patrzyk stepped up and took a shot. The sophomore standout found twine low center, breaking the scoreless tie.

John Carroll took no satisfaction in the early advantage, as Madyson Rosado, Gennuso, Olivia Zelenka, and Patrzyk bombarded Heidelberg's Meredith Bruce with five shots on goal in the next five minutes. Lucy Altieri also tabbed a shot on net in the 42nd minute, but Bruce turned each away.

The JCU lead stood at a single goal at half despite JCU owning a massive 14-2 advantage in shots.

The hosts got some chances early in the second half, but nothing too promising. Rosado did get some opportunities in response, but Bruce stood tall in between the pipes yet again. The teams then traded a few fouls and free kicks.

Things started to heat up for Carroll as the match surpassed 60 minutes. Abby Smith tested the keeper in the 63rd minute before the Student Princes at last relented in the 64th minute. Alli Malinky set up Patrzyk for a much-needed insurance goal. Patrzyk's tally marked her seventh goal of the season, and her fourth multi-goal game of her career.

The next ten minutes elapsed without much fanfare. Altieri managed a shot on goal in the 74th minute, but after that, the visitors found a response.

In the 76th minute, the Student Princes put an initial shot on goal. JCU managed to stop the shot, but then Makenzie Damsa slotted one home to halve the lead.

Just 26 seconds after kickoff, John Carroll tried to respond, with Bella Carcelli placing a shot on net. But Berg stood strong, and then turned away a Rosado shot in the 79th minute. About a minute later, Heidelberg got a shot on net, but Meredith Martin Koiser stopped it no problem. The rest of the game went by without any more scares, and the Blue Streaks got away with the victory.

The Blue Streaks might have lost the clean sheet, but still dominated stats-wise, especially in shots, 24-7 (14-4 on goal). Heidelberg did have more corner kicks, 5-3, and more fouls, 10-6.

Kathryn Shaffer and Brooke Kelly both logged the full 90 minutes, as did Merdeith Martin Koiser while tallying 3 saves.

The Blue & Gold are back in action on Saturday, heading to Marietta for a 7 pm match.
