Men's Soccer Betters Oberlin in Home Opener on Beautiful Night in University Heights

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The result was not perfect, but you cannot beat a win.

The Blue Streaks showcased a strong start and tallied a great late goal, but a tally allowed in the last 5 seconds took away a bit of the joy.

However, John Carroll Men's Soccer starts the season at 1-0 for the fifth straight season thanks to a 2-1 conquest of Oberlin College at Don Shula Stadium.

The Blue Streaks enjoyed the majority of possession in the early going. Logan Penton earned a chance early on but was turned away low right. In his first action as a Blue Streak, Jaden Wright tallied a shot in the seventh minute but came up empty. The Blue Streaks could not take advantage of some early corners.

Near the midpoint of the half, Oberlin started to see the ball some more. But the Yeomen did not get any dangerous chances.

A wave of substitutions by JCU led to some action in the Oberlin third. Off a corner kick, Nicholas Graeca fired in a shot. Amidst the fracas, an Oberlin player was called for a handball, granting the Blue Streaks a great chance for the first goal of the season on a penalty kick.

Patrick Koenig took full advantage of the chance in the 30th minute, burying the ball bottom left for the first goal of the season by the Wenzlers' Warriors.

In the 32nd minute, the Yeomen tallied their first shot on net of the game, but Brenden Moher stood up to the task, and once more just a minute later. Oberlin looked to build up some following a JCU yellow card. But then the hosts fired back. A marvelous Patrick Koenig touch set up a pretty chance for Jack Foht, but Oberlin stood tall.

The Blue Streaks stood on top after a great first half of the season with a 1-0 advantage.

Oberlin got the first shot on net of the second half in the 50th minute, but Moher turned it away. In the 64th minute, the Blue Streaks got a nice corner kick chance for Carter Esterle, but the shot was high. The 69th minute saw a phenomenal chance by Nicholas Graeca with a hard left-footed shot that found the belly of the keeper.

Physical play characterized the latter stages of the contest, with some yellow cards assessed. With just over three minutes left, the Blue Streaks got a nice chance with Logan Penton sending in a pass to Swann, who headed a shot in towards the net but was turned aside.

In the 88th minute, Hayden Haffner did not miss. The senior sent an absolute rocket into the bottom left corner. His laser of a shot came off a Swann assist for the insurance marker.

The Blue Streak would need it. Louis Gandelheid tabbed a left-footed, unassisted goal. But in the end, it did not matter, as the Blue Streaks walked away with the win.

While the result was not perfect with the late goal allowed, the Blue Streaks still walked away with a victory in the season opener.

A total of 20 players saw the field on Friday evening, showcasing the depth all across the field for Dejan Mladenovic's squad.

Next up is a key early-season showdown against an NCAA Division III powerhouse with a new head coach in Kenyon College.

"They're literally going right into an ice bath session," Mladenovic said. "We're going to manage every minute of the next 36 hours to make sure these guys are getting proper nutrition, hydration, sleep, all of the above because we've got a really big one on Sunday at 1:30 p.m."
