Softball Sweeps Capital in Critical Pair of Wins for the Blue Streaks

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- To close out a busy week for John Carroll Softball, the Blue Streaks took a 2-hour road trip to Columbus to do battle with the Capital Comets.

Consider the road trip a success, as the Blue Streaks conquered the Comets at Clowson Field, 4-3 and 8-5.

The two victories cap off a hectic week that began last Sunday with a two losses at Muskingum and continued with a pair of losses to Otterbein at home on Tuesday. Today's wins are critical cornerpieces as the Blue Streaks hope to build a foundation of success.

Here's how the Blue Streaks tabbed two Ohio Athletic Conference wins, with breakout efforts by several Streaks.

Game 1
John Carroll and Capital traded tallies to open the day. Alyssia Carmichael scored on a Mackenzie Stease double, answered by a Capital solo homerun in the bottom of the first. The Blue Streaks notched a second run in the second inning, as Bella Carcioppolo tripled and soon scored on a Lexie Genovese single. Capital responded by scoring one run apiece in the second and third frames off Brianna Callow.

In the fourth, Casey Cash got the nod in the circle. The hard-working freshman from Valley City showcased her skills with three shutout innings, scattering three hits and one walk in just her second appearance of the season. She'd be rewarded for her efforts.

In the fourth and sixth innings, the Blue Streaks scratched across runs, courtesy of Capital errors. The unearned runs, part of the product of 5 Capital errors in the game, pushed John Carroll ahead, 4-3.

An inning-opening walk by Cash led Alex Lagesse to turn to the bullpen in Danielle Orendi. The Pittsburgher saw runners advance to second and third with no outs, as an error on a sac bunt allowed two runners to get into scoring position. But Orendi bore down and struck out two Comets before fully slamming the door shut with a popout.

Orendi earned her fourth save of the season with her steady pitching, while Cash secured her first career win. At the dish, Stease (2-for-4, 2 doubles, RBI) and Carcioppolo (2-for-3, 2 runs) helped to carry the offense.

Game 2
Hungry for a split, the Comets fired up the offense to open the second contest. Capital's Lexie Leggett hit a pair of roundtrippers, the first a solo shot and the second a 2-run dinger, to push the Comets ahead, 3-0.

Emily Graves took the circle in the third and shut down the Comets quickly. And so, the Blue Streak bats got to work. Alyssia Carmichael singled and Kaylyn Odelli walked to bring up Mackenzie Stease. The veteran flexed her muscle with a homer over the fence left center to tie the game. And the Blue Streaks weren't done. After Capital garnered two outs, Lexie Genovese and Gabby Hougan singled, setting the table for Elaina Rodriguez. The Avon native came up in the clutch with a 2-run double to right center, scoring Genovese and Hougan.

JCU's 5-run frame in the fourth gave the visitors firm command of the game.

A Melissa Smith solo homer to left added to the cushion in the fifth, making it a 3-run game. Brianna Callow cruised through the fifth and sixth with ease. Nina Scavelli slotted a 2-out, 2-run single through the left side, crucially giving JCU more breathing room.

The Comets tried hard to make it interesting in the seventh, scoring twice to put the tying runner at the plate with two on and two out. But Callow remained steadfast, as a groundout concluded the day.

Graves garnered the win, while Callow corraled her third save of the season. Stease raked in Game 2 at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, 2 runs, and 2 extrabase hits. She finished 5-for-8 for the day with 3 doubles, 1 homer, and 4 RBI. Genovese and Scavelli also tabbed multi-hit games. As a team, the Blue Streaks accumulated a season-best 14 hits.

The Blue Streaks will now take Easter off before getting back to business on Wednesday at home vs. Heidelberg.
