Men's Tennis Comes Up Short against Ohio Northern in Ada

ADA, Ohio -- As many students journeyed back home for Easter break, John Carroll Men's Tennis hit the road, destined for Ada and an Ohio Athletic Conference affair.

The Thursday afternoon roadtrip did not end in a conquest, unfortunately.

The Blue Streaks accepted a 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Ohio Northern Polar Bears at the West Campus Courts.

The doubles contests were ferocious duels. Nathan Palinkas and Phillip Gorun lost an 8-5 war at #2 doubles, while Anthony Markello and Luis Wentz lost by an identical score.

The closest contest came at #1 doubles, where Logan Langovsky and Grant Sarnowski formed a formidable duo. The veterans eked out an 8-7 win by virtue of a 7-3 tiebreaker. With that clutch win, JCU trailed entering singles, 2-1.

Langovsky knotted the affair at 2-2 with a nice conquest at #1 singles, 6-2, 6-3. But that would be the last victory of the day for John Carroll.

Palinkas was the first to accept defeat, with a 6-4, 6-3 loss at #4 singles. Markello then dropped a 7-5, 6-2 loss at #3. Gorun then lost a 6-4, 6-3 match at #5, and so the Polar Bears wrapped up the match. Wentz then lost by the same 6-4, 6-3 result at #6.

Despite the match being finalized in favor of ONU, Sarnowski did not quit. His battle at #2 singles turned into a war. The junior won the opening set 7-6 (7-4) before losing a similarly fantastic battle in the second set 6-7 (2-7). And the tiebreaker for the final victory was decided by the minimum, 10-8, unfortunately not in Sarnowski's favor.

While the Blue Streaks faltered to the Polar Bears, the men of Walt Oden can take solace in putting up a great fight against the reigning OAC Champs. The Blue Streaks won four games in every singles match and five games in every doubles match. There were no blowouts, as every contest was a close one. The time of the match (3 hours, 31 minutes) indicates as much.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Saturday, April 15 at home vs. Marietta at the Short Family Tennis Center.
