Women's Lacrosse Ends Regular Season with a Win at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- In the final game of the regular season, the John Carroll Women's Lacrosse team was looking to improve on their conference record in a road trip to take on Muskingum.

The Blue Streaks did just that in spectacular fashion, beating the Fighting Muskies, 19-4.

With the conquest, the Blue Streaks wrap up the regular season at 7-7 and 5-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Blue Streaks have clinched the #3 seed in the quarterfinal round of the OAC Tournament.

Lainey Donalson got the Blue Streaks on the board first, scoring on a free position. Winning the following draw control, Donalson passed to Mary Doherty to take a 2-0 lead. The Blue Streaks continued to push on offense with Doherty winning the next draw control. She tallied an assist of her own after a shot by Kendall Gessner found the back of the net.

A Blue Streak turnover gave the Fighting Muskies a scoring opportunity, cutting the John Carroll lead to 3-1.

With five minutes left in the first quarter, Doherty tallied another goal, with Lauren Schwartz getting the assist. After a save by Josephine Lawler, Schwartz scored with an assist from Shannon Burdick. Doherty found the net again to end scoring in the first quarter, giving the Blue Streaks a comfortable 7-1 lead.

John Carroll's offense did not slow down to open the second quarter. Shannon Burdick claimed another assist, this time on a goal by Kathleen Cagney. Olivia Gerlach scored unassisted one minute later, adding to the JCU lead. A foul on Muskingum gave the Blue Streaks a free-position opportunity, with Olivia Hanulak registering another Blue Streak goal.

Gerlach found the back of the net again with half of the second quarter left to go. Burdick collected another assist on the day to make it an 11-1 score. Freshman midfielder Angelina Rotunno tallied a goal, the second of her career, to continue to push the Blue Streak lead. Karson Martin wrapped up the scoring in the first half, scoring on the woman-down for a dominant 13-1 lead at half.

John Carroll's scoring began to slow down in the second half, but the Blue Streaks were far from done. Vivian Rung registered a goal with Burdick claiming another assist. Mary Doherty got one past Muskingum with eight minutes to go in the third quarter with Schwartz getting the assist.

After Maddy Eifert caused a Fighting Muskies turnover, Gessner capitalized on the scoring opportunity, continuing to pull away from Muskingum. Martin gained another goal on the day for the Blue Streaks, with an assist by Schwartz to make it a 17-1 game going into the fourth quarter.

Eighteen seconds into the final quarter, Rung recorded a JCU goal. Gessner assisted on the goal, her first of the game.

The Fighting Muskies were not giving up, scoring on the free position to cut the lead to 18-2 for the Blue and Gold. With just over half of the fourth quarter to go, the Muskingum offense continued to play strong to narrow John Carroll's lead to 18-3.

The Blue Streak offense was not finished, though. Cagney tallied another goal, ending the Blue Streak scoring at 19 goals. Gessner claimed the assist. At the end of the game, the Fighting Muskies found the back of the net, making the final score 19-4.

The game was a team affair with 11 different players tallying goals. Mary Doherty led the team with four goals. Kathleen Cagney, Olivia Gerlach, Karson Martin, Vivian Rung, and Kendall Gessner each tallied two.

Shannon Burdick led the team in assists with four. Kendall Gessner and Lauren Schwartz followed with each having three assists.

With the regular season now complete, the Blue Streaks will have their eyes set on the OAC Tournament and await to see who will make the trip to University Heights.
