Women’s Lacrosse Skates Past the Polar Bears in OAC Tournament Quarterfinal

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- In the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal, the John Carroll Women's Lacrosse team toppled the Ohio Northern Polar Bears in a wonderful fashion, winning, 13-6.

The Blue Streaks will now survive and advance to the OAC Tournament Semifinal.

Although the Blue Streaks won the match, the Polar Bears placed themselves on the board first at the 10:25 mark. Two minutes later, senior Shannon Burdick responded with a Blue Streak goal, assisted by Lauren Schwartz.

After an ONU player penalty, Olivia Hanulak took advantage of the free position adding another goal at the 6:40 mark to put the Blue Streaks up, 2-1. ONU battled back, scoring less than a minute later to tie it up 2-2. However, John Carroll rounded out the quarter on a high note.

Senior Mary Doherty scored two goals in less than three minutes of play, with the second with 9 seconds left. Kendall Gessner assisted Doherty's second goal to help put the Blue Streaks up 4-2.

Doherty's strength did not end there. The Eastchester, NY native added another goal to JCU's lead, the first of the second quarter. Fellow senior Burdick scored 3 minutes later from an Anna Spitzer assist to tally another goal for the Blue Streaks, 6-2.

ONU picked back up momentum to break JCU's streak with a goal at the 7:44 mark, decreasing the lead to 6-3. Hanulak and the Blue Streaks answered back, scoring the final goal of the half at the 2:47 mark to keep the lead, 7-3.

Both the Blue Streaks and Polar Bears came out of the half fighting, as no goals were scored during the first 5 minutes of play despite 5 shots on goal (4 ONU, 1 JCU). Finally, the Blue Streaks broke the silence with a Gessner goal assisted by Spitzer at the 9:05 mark.

ONU responded four minutes later, registering another goal to cut JCU's lead 8-4.

Nonetheless, the Streaks responded less than 30 seconds after, as Gessner took advantage of a free position attempt for her 33rd goal of the season. Pittsburgh native Olivia Gerlach rounded out the third quarter, finding the back of the net with 3:28 left in play as the Blue Streaks enter double digits with a 10-4 lead.

During the last quarter of the contest, the Streaks continued to increase their lead.

Goals by Doherty (14:02, assisted by Spitzer), Hanulak (3:54, assisted by Gessner), and Gessner (3:16) proved too much for ONU. The Polar Bear's two late goals, including the last goal of the game with 9 seconds left, were not enough to displace the JCU efforts, making the final score 13-6.

Gessner topped the team with 5 points, while Hanulak also registered 3 goals. Doherty's all-around effort was impressive with a team-high 4 goals along with 4 groundballs, 4 draw controls, and 2 caused turnovers. Hannah Weiss tallied 4 GBs, while Gerlach notched 6 draw controls. Josephine Lawler made 9 saves in the winning effort.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Capital University (Bexley, OH) to take on the Comets next Wednesday, May 3, at 6 pm.
