Women's Lacrosse Fires Past Polar Bears on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- After an hour-long weather delay, the John Carroll Women's Lacrosse team was finally able to get underway on Senior Day at Shula Stadium.

The Blue Streaks must have harnessed the energy from the nearby lightning strikes which prohibited the game from starting the game as scheduled.

The Blue Streaks were in control of the game from wire to wire and secured a convincing 20-8 win. It marked the team's fourth straight victory and second in OAC play.

The 20 goals scored is the highest total of the season and the 8 goals allowed is tied for their fewest in 2023.

The Polar Bears had a 6-4 record ahead of the Saturday afternoon matchup. They started their 2023 season with three straight wins before losing four of their last six games.

Lainey Donalson found the back of the net first for John Carroll. The senior's first goal of the game came just 48 seconds into the first quarter. The Blue Streaks and the Polar Bears traded goals until it was tied at 2-2 with 8:03 left in the first quarter. The third goal for the Blue Streaks was scored by Olivia Gerlach at the five-minute mark.

The rest of the first half scoring was a dominating 11-2 run in favor of John Carroll.

As part of the 11-2 run, Gerlach netted two more goals to secure a hat-trick performance. Donalson also added two goals and earned herself a hat-trick as well. The goal production was spread out for the Blue Streaks as Kendall Gessner and Mary Doherty each scored two goals in the second quarter.

The Blue Streaks entered halftime with a 13-4 lead with three of the Polar Bears' goals being scored on free positions.

Things continued similarly in the second half, as Madison Polaski netted a free position goal just a minute into the third quarter. Polaski's fourth goal of the season started the running clock, which begins after a team leads by 10 or more goals, and sparked a strong quarter for John Carroll on both ends of the field.

The Blue Streaks scored five goals and kept the Polar Bears off the board. The Blue Streaks led 18-4 after three quarters of play.

While the game had long been over, the Polar Bears showed some fight in the final quarter. They scored three goals, nearly doubling their score entering the final period. But with the running clock, there was not enough time for the Polar Bears to construct a legitimate comeback bid.

The leading scorer for John Carroll was Olivia Gerlach with four goals, which pushed her season total to 20. Donalson, Doherty, and Gessner each finished with three goals.

Anna Spitzer, Olivia Hanulak, Vivian Rung, and Madison Polaski each recorded one goal. It was Rung's first collegiate goal. The Blue Streaks combined 20 goals, marking a team season high.

Senior Mary Doherty after the game expressed that by "riding on the energy we have now, and picking each other up even if someone makes a mistake and hyping each other up for the rest of the season", the Streaks will be able to continue to find consistency on the offensive end. Doherty also spoke on the importance of having team success on senior day, adding that it "meant the world seeing everyone be so successful and really come together as a team."

The Blue Streaks now own a 4-5 record on the season and are 2-0 in the OAC. The Polar Bears move 6-5 and fall to 0-2 in the OAC.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Wednesday from Otterbein University. They then return home next Friday to take on Capital University.
