Men's Lacrosse Bests Polar Bears on Windy Day in Ada

ADA, Ohio -- Following a tough road loss on Wednesday, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse was eager to course correct on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks did just that, with shutdown defense and opportunistic offense doing the trick.

The men of Joe Rautenstrauch tallied a 9-3 victory over Ohio Northern in Ada on a wild weather day.

The contest started slow for both squads. Turnovers harmed the Blue Streaks in the early going, leading to a JCU timeout midway through the quarter while the game was still scoreless. Morgan Morrell found twine after the break, although it took five more minutes of gametime to happen. Ohio Northern responded immediately afterwards, and so the game stood 1-1 after the opening stanza.

The JCU offense did not heat up early in the second, so JCU burned another timeout at the 12-minute mark. Ohio Northern remained firm, and drew a JCU penalty at the 8:15 mark. Thankfully, the Blue Streaks killed the penalty and scored shortly after the man-advantage ended, as Matt Berdysiak found twine at 6:52. While the Polar Bears looked to even things up late, even taking a couple timeouts, the Blue Streaks remained steady on defense, carrying a slim 2-1 lead into the break.

Cam Cecere assumed faceoff duties out of the break and instantly made a difference, winning the opening faceoff of the third quarter. Seconds later, Morgan Morrell found Berdysiak for JCU's third goal of the day. Morrell slotted home another with 11:59 left in the third. Turnovers and failed clears were persistent, and a slashing call on JCU opened the door for an ONU goal at 5:30. A few minutes later, Ohio Northern further slimmed the deficit to 4-3.

The Blue Streaks relented no more offense, firing to a 5-0 run to end the game. The key strike occurred with 9 seconds left in the third. Josh Lombardo found Berdysiak for a critical goal to push JCU ahead by two goals entering the fourth.

Another Cecere faceoff win to start the fourth led to a Colin Morrissey goal just 12 seconds into the fourth. A few minutes later, Russo stretched the margin to 7-3. The Polar Bears tried to get off the mat, but two more goals near the midway mark of the quarter put the nail in the coffin. Morrissey provided JCU's eighth goal off a Berdysiak assist, and then Berdysiak provided the closer off a Morrell helper.

Cam Cecere proved to be one of the heroes, with a team-best 7 groundballs while winning 9-of-11 faceoffs. Brendan Hein followed with 4 groundballs, while Conor Ryan and Camden Uchic each tabbed 3 groundballs. Ryan and Michael Bevington tallied 3 caused turnovers apiece.

In net, Jon Gaglio allowed just 3 goals while tallying 11 saves. Offensively, Berdysiak (5 points) and Morrell (4 points) led the way.
