Men's Lacrosse Fire Past Comets on the Road

BEXLEY, Ohio – Defense was the story of the day for John Carroll Men's Lacrosse.

The Blue Streaks fought off an upstart Capital Comets squad thanks to excellent defense in 13-5 victory.

Jon Gaglio stood firm in cage, notching a career-high 18 saves in the conquest, as the Blue Streaks roared for an early lead and prevented any Capital comeback.

The Blue Streaks burst out of the gates and got out to a huge lead before Capital could tie their shoes. Morgan Morrell needed just 80 seconds to strike first. That opening tally started a scoring barrage, as goals by Matt Berdysiak (off a Max Cook assist), Colin Morrissey (off a Michael Bevington assist), Berdysiak, and Morrissey (Berdysiak assist) quickly constructed a 5-0 lead by the 9:03 mark.

Morrell pushed the lead to 6 goals before Capital responded with a couple tallies. And so, the Blue Streaks carried a 6-2 lead into the second quarter.

The next stanza proved to be less goal-filled, though the Blue Streaks still outscored the Comets. Berdysiak netted a man-up goal at 12:12 off a Morrell assist and Morrell found twine at 3:28. Thanks to strong defensive work, JCU hopped into the locker room with an 8-3 advantage.

Aidan Dugan opened the scoring for the visitors out of halftime. While Capital tabbed a couple goals to make it interesting, the Blue Streaks took momentum near the end of the quarter, as Morrell scored off a Morrissey assist with 1:05 left. JCU possessed a healthy 10-5 advantage entering the fourth quarter and the game was never again in doubt.

Josh Lombardo, Cam Cecere, and Morrell each scored in the fourth quarter and John Carroll's defense shut down the Comets, preventing the goal from finding twine in the final quarter.

Gaglio played a starring role in net, aided by two caused turnovers apiece by Jake Caress and Brendan Hein, who also accrued five groundballs. Morrell played the starring role on offense with five goals and two assists.

The Blue Streaks advance to 7-2 on the season, including 3-1 in OAC play.

John Carroll now will take Easter off before preparing to return home next Wednesday against Heidelberg.
