Softball Scores Two Wins in Penultimate Day of Florida Trip

NAPLES, Fla. – For the third time during this spring break trip, John Carroll Softball swept the day.

The Blue Streaks worked hard for two wins on Thursday at the Gene Cusic Classic at North Collier Regional Park. John Carroll squeezed past Haverford College, 5-4, and fired past the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 6-2.

The team's pitching continued its outstanding spring, while the bats provided a nice spark all day long.

John Carroll now sports a 6-2 record, guaranteeing a winning record for the Florida trip, something done by the Blue Streaks just four times in their previous 10 sojourns to the Sunshine State.

Game 1
Following a quiet first inning, John Carroll's bats erupted in the second frame.

Mackenzie Stease started with a hard hit ball up the line for a single. Jess Lichota singled to second, and Nina Scavelli checked in as a pinchrunner for Stease. Kasyn Scarantine walked to load the bases, bringing up Tora Walters. The New Castle, PA native slotted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Scavelli. An Elaina Rodriguez single loaded the bases again quickly. Gracie Bressoud and Kendall Trunzo drew walks to score runs.

Haverford opted for a pitching change, but JCU wasn't done. Alyssia Carmichael knocked in one more run on a sac fly to center, and so the Blue Streaks rolled into the third with a 4-0 lead.

The Fords scratched across a run in the top of the third thanks to a few basehits, but Brianna Callow limited the damage to one run. And in the bottom of the frame, the Blue Streaks got it back. Stease and Scarantine got on base with a HBP and a single, and Walters drove home Stease for the 5-1 advantage.

Emily Graves checked into the circle for the fourth and allowed a run, as Haverford snuck some softly hit balls in for hits. But the freshman held the Fords to one run, stranding a runner.

Following a quiet JCU half, Haverford pushed across a couple runs in a crazy inning. One of the Fords' runs scored on a bad throw to try to catch a runner stealing second and another came across on a walk. Danielle Orendi allowed a couple walks, but got out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve the JCU lead.

Haverford garnered three outs from JCU in the bottom of the sixth, and quickly got a runner aboard in the seventh on an infield single. Orendi, steady as ever, stayed the course. The junior secured three straight outs to strand the tying run on second and earn the save, her second of the trip (and the second of her career).

While the Fords tallied more hits (12-6), the JCU pitchers stayed calm, cool, and collected, as Haverford left 10 runners on base. Callow earned the victory with a 3-inning start for JCU. Stease led the charge at the dish with a 2-for-2 game.

Game 2
The Blue Streaks kept the momentum up from the first game. Bella Carcioppolo initiated things with a single to short in the top of the first, and charged to third on a Kaylyn Odelli single down the left field line. Jess Lichota then singled to bring home Carcioppolo for the first run of the ballgame. Pitt-Bradford staunched the bleeding with two straight outs.

Danielle Orendi got the start in Game 2 and allowed a double to the leadoff hitter before bearing down with three straight outs. As a reward for her efforts, the Blue Streaks gave her more leeway with an insurance run. A Maddie Traub RBI single up the middle did the trick, pushing the lead to 2-0 JCU.

Orendi continued to cruise in the circle, with a 3-up, 3-down inning in the second and a 1-hit frame in the third. She rolled through the fourth and fifth with quick works, including a 2-strikeout effort in the fifth.

The Blue Streaks responded by giving her some more cushion in the sixth. Serena Paterno singled and Traub walked to start things off. In stepped Alyssia Carmichael. The junior placed a perfectly hit ball right in front of the right fielder, who tried to block the ball but couldn't. Paterno scored on the hit, and Traub crossed home after the fielder struggled with the tricky hit.

Orendi needed the cushion, as Pitt-Bradford's bats finally came alive in the sixth. The home team hit a 2-run homer to slim the gap to 4-2. And then, the Panthers tripled to put the tying run at the plate. Brianna Callow came into the game and quickly put an end to that, striking out the next batter.

In the seventh, the Blue Streaks got the runs back. Jess Lichota singled up the middle with one out. Critically, Pitt-Bradford made an error on a double play ball, giving JCU new life. The Blue Streaks took advantage, as Serena Paterno smoothly smoked a double to knock in both runners with 2 outs.

With a 6-2 cushion, Callow allowed a couple walks before locking in with two strikeouts and then a popout to slam the door shut for her first career save. Callow did not allow any hits in her 1.1 innings of work. Orendi allowed just 4 hits in 5.2 innings.

"I focused on what I could control, including targeting each batter individually," said Orendi. "I'm impressed with how we've started, it feels really good. I think we're going to go far and I'm excited to see what happens this season."

Meanwhile, JCU's bats erupted for 12 hits. Eight Blue Streaks tallied hits, with Jess Lichota accounting for a 3-for-4 game. Serena Paterno's RBI double also made a huge difference, as she finished 2-for-2, as did Maddie Traub.

The Blue Streaks will finish up the Florida trip on Friday, facing Grove City at 9 am and Pitt-Bradford again at 11 am.
