Blue Streaks Falter Against Anna Maria

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Anna Maria College came out swinging early and often and were able to take down the John Carroll baseball team, 8-3, at the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Sports Park's Field #2.

The Blue Streaks came into the morning a little sluggish as they were retired in order to start the game. On the other hand, the Amcats wasted no time finding their groove. With runners on first and second and two outs in the home half of the first, Jeremy Rosenberg shot a double into the outfield that brought home the first run of the game. Anna Maria wouldn't stop there though, as Hunter Dunithan found open space in his next at bat and drove in another run with an RBI single. A strikeout ended the inning in the next at-bat, but not before the Amcats were up 2-0 over the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll tallied their first two runners in the second inning, but were unable to bring them around to score. The Amcats' bats stayed hot early as they loaded the bases and were able to capitalize with an RBI single by Jarrod Marifiote to extend their lead 3-0. Sylvan Wiley did well to work out of the jam as he retired the next batter and ended the inning with runners stranded on every base.

In the third inning, Erik Daugenti muscled a ball over the wall with two outs to trim the Anna Maria lead to 3-1.

The Amcats had an immediate response in the home half of the inning. Dunithan walked and stole second with two outs. Tommy Sasso stepped to the plate, and once more with two outs, Anna Maria was able to drive in a run with an RBI single. The run pushed the lead back to three, 4-1.

John Carroll had an early rally in the top of the fourth, starting with Justin Hanley single. Connor Mayle soon doubled to drive Hanley in and chip away at the lead, now trailing just 4-2.

Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the next two innings would bring four runs for the Amcats. Sasso pushed across one with an RBI double. Dunithan would also score in the next at-bat on a John Carroll error. In the sixth, James Powers rocked a solo shot, which was quickly built on with a Kosta Drosidis double and Marifiote RBI double.

Bryce Holt was able to launch another Blue Streaks solo shot over the wall in between the scoring for Anna Maria, but the damage was done as the score was 8-3, with the Amcats on top.

Jack Marzec, who entered in the sixth, would finish out the game on the bump and not allow a single hit to the Blue Streaks across the final 3.2 innings of the game.

John Carroll will enjoy a few days off from the diamond and will take on University of Minnesota Morris in a double header on Friday, March 10 starting at 3:00pm.
