Baseball Gets Back to Their Winning Ways With Sweep Over Minnesota Morris

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- After losing their last two games during the RussMatt Invitational, the John Carroll baseball team got back to their winning ways in the Sunshine State, as they swept Minnesota Morris 3-1 and 6-3, respectfully.

Game 1

JCU jumped out early in the first game as Bryce Holt hit an RBI single with two outs in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Following the JCU score, the pitching battle ramped up with both teams struggling to generate much offense. John Carroll's Matthew Aukerman was locked in from the start as he struck out five Cougar batters in the first three innings. Meanwhile, Minnesota Morris' Josh Osten settled in after giving up the early score as he proceeded to strike out the next four Blue Streak batters.

The Cougars tied the game at one apiece to begin the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI single from Ben Meuser. Meanwhile, John Carroll continued to struggle offensively. It wasn't until the fifth inning when Erik Daugenti produced a game changing single up the middle for an RBI double to give the Blue Streaks a 3-1 lead.

Aukerman's excellent play continued into the sixth and seventh innings as he struck out four more Cougar batters, three coming in the final frame, to help lead the Blue Streaks to victory.

The senior allowed just five hits against 26 batters while finishing with a season-high 12 strikeouts as he moved to 2-0 on the year.

Game 2

The scoring picked up in the second game as both teams traded runs throughout. Minnesota Morris began the scoring following a wild pitch from John Carroll's Jon Ambro allowing David Steffen to score.

In the second, Logan LaMere doubled to right field to give the Blue Streaks their first score of the contest. Moments later, Michael Persichetti singled to left field to bring LaMere home and give JCU a one run lead. Minnesota Morris wasted no time gaining their lead back as a single from Evan Benson and double from Steffen gave the Cougars a 3-2 advantage. John Gavric subbed in for Ambro and struck out the remaining two batters.

With two outs and a man on third in the top of the fourth, Connor Mayle homered to right center to regain the lead for the Blue Streaks 4-3. After a Persichetti steal to second base, Sean Connolly tripled to center field to bring Persichetti home and increase the Blue Streak lead to two.

Gavric continued his winning ways by not allowing a hit in the fourth. He finished with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched before being replaced by Owen Gerba.

The Blue Streaks added onto their total to begin the fifth with an RBI single from Jack Beiter. Meanwhile, Gerba found himself in a hole early with bases loaded and just one out. Fortunately, Gerba dug deep and struck out the remaining two batters to preserve the lead.

A 20 minute rain delay ensued during the top of the seventh inning, and Austin Miller came in to preserve the game and earn the save in the bottom frame.

John Carroll will look to close their Florida trip out on a high note as they will play a double header with Penn State-Altoona on Saturday, March 11 starting at 9:30 am.
