Women's Lacrosse Staggered by Stevens in Spring Break Opener

HOBOKEN, NJ -- Spring is underway, which means lacrosse season is in full swing. For John Carroll Women's Lacrosse, part of reaching the culmination of spring sun is by learning to dance in the rain. In other words, regardless of outcome, the show must go on.

The Blue Streaks began their Spring Break tour with a pit stop in Hoboken, New Jersey for a matchup against Stevens Institute of Technology.

The Blue and Gold were not able to best a talented crew of Ducks, resulting in a 20-7 loss on the road.

John Carroll's odds were skewed early in the game as Stevens found the back of the net ten times in the first period of play alone.

The Blue Streaks were not able to respond until the second period opened, but their goal tally could only amount to one as the first half of play closed.

Kendall Gessner was responsible for the lone goal in the first slot of play, which gave the Blue Streaks a flicker of hope for what the later portion of play could bring.

In the third period, John Carroll found some offensive momentum and confidence. Shannon Burdick was able to find the net early in the third period, netting her sixth goal of the season.

Minutes later, Gessner made another appearance on the stat sheet with her second goal of the afternoon for the Blue and Gold.

As the third period closed, Caylin Perryman gave John Carroll its fourth goal of the afternoon, off an assist from Olivia Hanulak

But, as the Blue and Gold gained some solid footing, Stevens continued to stretch the field, making it difficult for the Blue Streaks to respond on the defense, but also decrease the scoring deficit on offense.

Nonetheless, Mary Doherty and Emily Van Gorder eached picked up two ground balls in an effort to put John Carroll at the helm in terms of possession.

Josephine Lawler and Olivia Munding split their time in net during each respective half, allowing both goalies to earn some pivotal time that will likely translate into circumstances during Ohio Athletic Conference play.

In the final period, Doherty, Perryman, and Olivia Gerlach fired up the offense with some late in the fourth goals, but the efforts simply could not match the powerhouse offense that Stevens relentlessly pushed.

Although the game didn't end in a win on the record, the Blue Streaks are learning to work as a unit against some of the best opponents from across the country. John Carroll continues to look to the future, trusting the process along the way.

After all, the Blue Streaks are simply learning to dance in the rain. Their time, dedication and efforts will soon be recognized, it's just a matter of time. Next up for John Carroll is a contest at Western Connecticut State on Wednesday at 5 pm.
