Women's Lacrosse Drops Middle Game of Spring Break Swing Through the East

DANBURY, Conn. -- John Carroll Women's Lacrosse has crossed state boundaries a number of times during Spring Break, but only for one reason: exposure.

The Blue Streaks are in the depths of testing their limits for the sole purpose of understanding the level of competitiveness that marks women's lacrosse, particularly on the eastern seaboard.

In a close battle against Western Connecticut State this evening, John Carroll ultimately came up short, suffering a 17-11 loss. But, there is still plenty to reflect on.

In the first period, the Blue and Gold tallied a goal a minute into the match. Anna Spitzer was the initial player to find the back of the net, giving the Blue Streaks plenty of momentum.

However, the Wolves rallied, scoring soon after Spitzer's goal. Olivia Gerlach proved to push the Blue Streak offense forward with a quick counter-attack, giving John Carroll their second goal of the game.

Lainey Donalson continued Gerlach's momentum with the Blue Streak's third goal of the period, but the Wolves would go on 5-0 scoring run to end the quarter.

In the second period, Western Connecticut continued to strike on the offense, netting their seventh goal of the match. Shannon Burdick helped John Carroll readjust their plan of attack, scoring the team's fourth goal of the game.

As the second quarter closed, Gerlach scored to put the score at 9-5, the Wolves still maintaining a sufficient lead over the Blue Streaks.

The second half of play showcased trades of possession, pivotal ground ball pickups, and significant draw controls that gave John Carroll some hope.

Lainey Donalson picked up five ground balls on the day, along with six draw controls. Jaimey Hogan was able to gather two ground balls as a serious presence on the defense for John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks were able to neutralize Western Connecticut's offense for a period of time, but the Wolves were quick on bouncing back into a threatening offensive and defensive groove.

Shannon Burdick, Caylin Perryman and Olivia Hanulak all added to the goal tally for the Blue Streaks, leading to a 13-8 score as the third period closed. John Carroll still had a decent deficit to climb out of going into the final period.

The fourth period, in a similar fashion as the third, involved offensive and defensive surges for both squads, but, when John Carroll mustered up goals, the Wolves almost always countered with quick goals.

Donalson, Kathleen Cagney, and Spitzer were on the stats sheet for goals in the fourth, but, as mentioned, Western Connecticut created a hole that was too deep for John Carroll to dig out of. Spitzer's goal did come when JCU was two women down, a rare feat.

The loss puts the Blue Streaks at an overall record of 0-5, but none of their competition has been from the Ohio Athletic Conference. Again, the initial schedule is aimed at creating an atmosphere in which John Carroll learns to trust the process and embrace the journey.

The final game of their Spring Break tour is set for Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Blue Streaks are headed to the Rochester Institute of Technology.
