Rapid Start Propels Blue Streaks to Fourth Consecutive Victory

DELAWARE, Ohio – For the second consecutive season, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse (4-1, 0-0 OAC) has defeated Ohio Wesleyan (3-3, 0-0 NCAC) in non-conference play, this time by a score of 11-7. This also marks the first time in school history that the Blue Streaks have defeated the Battling Bishops on the road.

It took less than a minute for the Blue and Gold to strike first, as Josh Lombardo found the back of the net just 50 seconds into the contest.

This goal was the beginning of a red-hot start for John Carroll, as Ian Venard scored his third goal of the season from a Colin Morrissey assist just over two minutes later.

After nearly four scoreless minutes, the Blue Streaks cashed in on a man-up opportunity with a Morrissey goal from an assist by Morgan Morrell. The Blue and Gold continued to pour it on in the first quarter, as two more unanswered goals from Max Cook and Morrissey gave them a commanding 5-0 lead just over 90 seconds later.

The Battling Bishops would finally answer with their first goal just over 10 minutes into the first quarter. However, just 52 seconds later, Morrell scored his first goal of the day from an assist by Morrissey to make it 6-1 through one quarter.

The start of the second quarter meant another fast start for John Carroll, as Morrell found Matt Berdysiak for his eighth goal of the season under a minute into the period. But the scoring would stop for a while, as stout defense from both sides led to a scoreless quarter for the next 13:59.

That is, until Ohio Wesleyan finally found the back of the net with seven seconds left in the first half, leaving the Blue Streaks with a 7-2 halftime lead.

In the third, the Battling Bishops used a man-up opportunity to score first just over two minutes into the period. But the Blue and Gold quickly answered, with Josh Lombardo scoring again just over two minutes later. The two teams exchanged just one goal apiece over the final 10:31 of the period, with Morrell scoring the latter from a Morrissey assist for the second time.

In the fourth, Aidan Dugan netted his fourth goal of the season to give John Carroll a 10-4 lead nearly three minutes into the final quarter. But Ohio Wesleyan refused to quit, scoring a pair of goals to cut their deficit to four with over five minutes remaining.

Finally, with less than two minutes remaining, Josh Lombardo took advantage of an empty crease to record his first career hat-trick, thanks to an assist from Dugan. While the Battling Bishops scored again with 23 seconds remaining, it would not be enough, as the Blue Streaks would earn their fourth consecutive victory.

Colin Morrissey led the way for the Blue and Gold with three assists and five points, both of which were career-highs. Morgan Morrell was not far behind, finishing with four points (two goals and two assists). Both Morrissey and Morrell have scored at least two goals in each of the team's first five games.

In the crease, Jon Gaglio recorded 12 saves and tied a season-low of seven goals allowed in his fourth straight victory.

As a team, John Carroll had 25 of their 34 shots on goal, compared to Ohio Wesleyan's 19-for-33, went 11-for-21 on face-offs, and converted 20 of their 23 clears.

Next on the schedule, the Blue Streaks will host Wilmington, beginning OAC play on Saturday, March 25 at 1 PM in University Heights.
