Men's Lacrosse Dominates Wilmington In OAC Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - The John Carroll men's lacrosse team began the OAC portion of their 2023 schedule with a dominant 26-2 victory over the Wilmington Quakers.

After dropping their first game of the season on the road to Roanoke College, the Blue Streaks have now won five games in a row.

John Carroll and Wilmington have only a brief history dating back to 2013. The Blue Streaks have dominated in head-to-head clashes with a record of 8-0. In those eight matchups, the Blue Streaks own a positive goal difference of 155.

The Blue Streaks instantly took control of the game in the first quarter. Morgan Morrell netted the first two goals of the afternoon for John Carroll.

The blue and gold were in the driver's seat for the first 15 minutes of action as they scored 10 goals in the first quarter. Matt Berdysiak tallied four of them.
Zachary Bielozer also scored his first goal of the season with 4:45 left in the opening quarter.

The Quakers were scoreless until Andrew Chevrette put one in the net with one second left in the first quarter.

The beginning of the second quarter was a slightly more evenly sided affair. Berdysiak scored another goal three minutes into the quarter and Jacob Snyder responded with a Wilmington goal several minutes later.

Then, at the 7:09 mark, the game entered a weather delay due to nearby thunderstorms. The delay lasted an hour and seven minutes before play eventually resumed.

The Blue Streaks came out firing after the delay, scoring three goals in the first three minutes after the stoppage. Josh Lombardo, Berdysiak, and Morrell each scored a goal to give John Carroll a 14-2 lead with 4:19 remaining in the first half.

After adding two more goals in the final two minutes, John Carroll took a 16-2 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Blue Streaks racked up six goals and kept Wilmington off the scoreboard. Chandler Bankey recorded his first goal of the season with 11:35 left in the period. Max Cook and Vinny Fiorella also each scored their second goals of the season.

The fourth quarter was controlled wire to wire by John Carroll. The Blue Streaks netted four more goals in the period to secure a 26-2 win.

Twelve Blue Streaks recorded a goal in the game and 10 tallied at least one assist. Berdysiak led the way with a team-high six goals and six assists. His 12 total points are the third-highest total in program history. Morrell was second on the team with four goals and four assists. Colin Morrissey, Ian Venard, and Vinny Fiorella all had hat trick performances.

Zack Moraitis was 15-21 on faceoffs and freshman Nicholas Yemma was 7-10.

Next up for JCU is a road matchup with crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, March 29. The 7-2 Yellow Jackets are second in the OAC behind the 5-1 Blue Streaks.
