Women's Lacrosse Drops an OT Thriller to Oberlin in Home Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A rare 60 degree early March evening, combined with High School Night, led to a nice environment for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse on Wednesday night.

But despite a strong fight, the Blue Streaks dropped a 10-9 overtime defeat in the team's home opener against Oberlin at Don Shula Stadium.

For a while, the Oberlin defense figured out John Carroll, but a late offensive onslaught by the hosts forced overtime and nearly grabbed a win.

The Blue Streaks fired out hot of the gates. John Carroll roared for a 3-0 lead, with Caylin Perryman opening the scoring off a Shannon Burdick assist at the 12:13 mark. At the 9-minute mark, John Carroll struck twice, first on a Burdick tally off a Mary Doherty pass and then on an Olivia Gerlach marker.

Oberlin got on the board with 8:17 to play in the first, and just a minute later Kendall Gessner provided an answer to push JCU ahead, 4-1. But then, the Blue Streak attack fell cold after standing ahead by three after 15 minutes of play.

Oberlin's defense stunted the Blue Streaks for a long stretch, and so the Yeowomen slowly chipped away at the JCU lead. With 41 seconds left in the first half, the Yeowomen snagged their first lead of the day, moving ahead 5-4. That score stood at halftime.

The third quarter was a defensive affair. The Yeowomen found twine twice in the third, taking a 7-4 lead into the final stanza.

Out of the break, the Blue Streaks turned the tides. John Carroll's tenacity finally paid off, as Olivia Gerlach found room and made Oberlin pay. The senior scored three goals in succession to open the period, tying the ballgame with 8:20 left to play.

The teams then experienced a seesaw effect. Oberlin scored to take the lead in a critical momentum halter. But JCU tallied a goal to even things up, as Gessner got a goal at 5:44. A few minutes later, Oberlin fought through a tough JCU defense to take the lead.

With 1:11 left, the Blue Streaks made magic happen. JCU attacked the net and drew a yellow card, setting up a free-position shot for Kendall Gessner. With ice in her veins, the Pine-Richland grad fired home a goal to tie things up with 1:09 remaining.

Oberlin got a free-position attempt very late with a chance to win the game, but Josephine Lawler stood strong and got the save to send it to overtime.

In extra time, the Yeowomen scored on a pretty goal, a play made despite a stout JCU defense.

John Carroll outshot Oberlin, 23-20, and enjoyed a 20-15 advantage in ground balls, plus a 14-9 margin in draw controls. Olivia Gerlach's 4 goals guided JCU's offense, with Kendall Gessner's hat trick helping. Burdick tabbed a team-high 4 assists. Mary Doherty topped the team with 6 draw controls, adding 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers. Jaimey Hogan also managed a pair of caused turnovers. Josephine Lawler registered 5 saves in cage.

John Carroll will travel down the eastern seaboard over spring break, with the first game set for Sunday against a tough Stevens squad. Sunday's contest is slated for a 1 pm start.
