Volleyball Concludes Regular Season with a Home Win over Oberlin

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- To start tonight's matchup between John Carroll University and Oberlin College, Senior Payton Miozzi sang The Star-Spangled Banner in her last outing in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks were able to take home a 3-0 sweep against the Oberlin Yeowomen for their last home match of the season. The set scores were 25-19, 25-15 and 25-19.

The seniors led the charge in the first set. On the offensive side, Jennifer Follmer paved the way with 4 kills. These kills were assisted by fellow seniors Maddie Maziarz and Lexi MacDonald. Senior Ellie Schenk also collected an assist for a kill from Sophomore Haley Nicholson. On the back half of the court, Payton Miozzi covered ground and earned herself 5 digs.

As a team, the Blue Streaks tabbed 12 kills and 10 digs. Thanks to their combined efforts, John Carroll won the first set 25-19.

In the second set, the Blue Streaks displayed their smarts by letting multiple serves travel out of bounds. John Carroll also showed amazing court awareness, with Kendra Dziubinski, Jessica Liddle, and Hailey Williams tipping the ball right into the holes of Oberlin's defense. Follmer had another great set, adding another 4 kills to her tally in her electric senior season.

Mary Kate Sheehan and Kendra Dziubinski made a great team at the net, blocking a few attacks from the Yeowomen. With such strong defensive and offensive smarts, the Blue Streaks were able to pull off the second set win with a score of 25-15.

Steph Conley started off the third set hot, quickly attacking Oberlin's defense and earning herself two kills. Freshmen Kallan Hrics and Natalie Glowe each tallied 3 kills a piece, both establishing a steady presence for the team in this set.

Sisters Stephanie and Kristina Laraway worked seamlessly together on the court, with Stephanie scoring the match point from a set from Kristina. Stephanie ended the set with three kills. Kristina also collected the first ace of her career. The final set score was 25-19.

The Blue Streaks ended the match with 38 kills, 32 assists and 41 digs. The team worked well together in a much needed win before heading into OAC Tournament play.

Next Tuesday, the Blue Streaks will travel to Ada and face the Ohio Northern Polar Bears in a quarterfinal match at 7 pm.
