Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Rivalry Match at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – The Blue Streaks traveled to the westside for tonight's Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against a familiar rival.

The Blue Streaks battled in the third set to win 25-18 after tough losses in the first and second sets. In the end, John Carroll lost in an all-out fight for the fourth set, with a score of 27-25.

The 3-1 loss at Baldwin Wallace drops JCU to 13-7 overall and 2-2 in OAC play.

The Yellow Jackets came out quickly, scoring four straight points, but the Blue Streaks pushed back and battled for the lead. A service ace from Jessica Liddle and a kill from Hailey Williams allowed John Carroll to bounce around for a one-point lead. Extensive efforts on both sides of the court made for stunning defensive saves and long rallies. Ultimately, blocks from Baldwin Wallace on Blue Streak attacks caused a 25-20 set one win for the Yellow Jackets.

Hot off the first set, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-point run with multiple service aces to start the second. An early timeout from the Blue Streaks refreshed the team and ended the Baldwin Wallace run. Despite a huge defensive presence from Marissa Lynch and Kendra Dziubinski at the net, the Yellow Jackets were able to put a 10-point lead. At the set point, John Carroll found some life to fight back, but the advances from their opponents was too much and Baldwin Wallace won set two with a score of 25-13.

The Blue Streaks cranked up the intensity moving into the third set with Jennifer Follmer quickly earning three kills. A fired up John Carroll offense culminated a 6-point lead, with Marissa Lynch leading the charge with an additional two more kills. Kendra Dziubinski became a force at the net, collecting herself a few kills from well placed tips.

Throughout the third set, Hailey Williams found her rhythm and added more cushion to the Blue Streaks lead, bringing the score to 22-15. A service ace by Maddie Maziarz and a kill by Jessica Liddle led the Streaks to win the set, 25-18.

In an intense fourth set, the Blue Streaks and Yellow Jackets expended all efforts to control the set. Dziubinski continued to find holes in Baldwin Wallace's defense, creating an initial lead for the Blue and Gold. Exceptional digs from Lexi MacDonald, Payton Miozzi, and Hailey Williams set up the offense to hammer more attacks into the Yellow Jackets defenses.

It was an absolute battle for the last points of the fourth set, with neither side taking no more than a 2-point lead. More hot blocks by Baldwin Wallace off the strong hits from John Carroll brought the set to 25-25. Ultimately, the Yellow Jackets managed to pull off victory with a score of 27-25.

Jennifer Follmer finished the evening with 10 kills, with Marissa Lynch and Jessica Liddle earning 8 each. On the defensive end, Hailey Williams covered the court with 14 digs on the night. Maddie Maziarz topped the team with 25 assists.

The Blue Streaks are back on the road this Saturday to take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern.
