Men's Soccer Shellacks Yellow Jackets in Berea

Blue Streaks Victorious in the Cuyahoga Derby with a Statement Offensive Showing

BEREA, Ohio -- On Wednesday night, John Carroll Men's Soccer traveled to George Finnie Stadium to take on a familiar foe in Baldwin Wallace on their home turf. With a spotless tenure in the Ohio Athletic Conference thus far, the Blue Streaks were hungry to build off of their momentum coming off of a nice 5-1 win over Marietta College, along with twelve goals in their last two matches.

Despite John Carroll dominating the series between the two, Baldwin Wallace has always given John Carroll a run for their money. Most notably, the last two games have shown that, with their 2021 matchup being neck and neck, with John Carroll opening the account midway through the second half, a chaotic deflection would level it for Baldwin Wallace in the 85th minute, and Benjamin Hryszko would score in the 88th minute for the 2-1 win. Just last year, John Carroll notched a narrow win courtesy of an early goal from Patrick Koenig.

It would be a shocking result for all parties involved, as #20 John Carroll secured an absolutely massive victory, winning the game, 8-1, at BW's home stadium. A result of his magnitude marked the most goals the team has scored in a single game since 2018, and the most goals scored by the Blue Streaks away from home since October 25, 1997.

With the sound of the official's whistle, both teams jockeyed to set the tone early on. John Carroll got a few massive chances early on including a waived-off penalty, while Baldwin Wallace exposed the cracks of the Blue Streaks' back line with a few looks at goal, but goalkeeper Brenden Moher came up with a bundle of stellar stops. The Yellow Jackets' offense presents loads of talent with athleticism that would be difficult to replicate, but their momentum was thwarted about a quarter of a way through the contest.

After a solid effort progressing down the pitch, senior defender Izac Coleman would be on the corner kick on the right hand side of the pitch. In quintessential fashion, John Carroll loaded up the box, creating loads of traffic for the Yellow Jackets' keeper, Sam Cipriano. Coleman's ball flew into the area, and through the fire and flames, the ball ended up in the back of the net. John Carroll took a prominent lead just 23 minutes into the match.

After this, the floodgates were opened, and John Carroll began its reign of terror. Things began to heat up, and a player infamous for his attacking quality, but quiet so far this season, would step up and make his mark: senior Logan Penton.

On the right hand side of the pitch in the attacking third, John Carroll had some brilliant buildup in the wide channel. Nicholas Graeca would make a great pick-pocket and run past the defender and square it into the 18-yard box to Patrick Koenig, who played another square ball to Logan Penton for a 2-0 lead. An excellently-crafted goal to give the Blue Streaks another tally on the scoresheet.

In an astonishing turn of events, Logan Penton found the back of the net again exactly 22 seconds later. A ball back to the goalkeeper was intercepted by the Vermillion-native and Penton beat the keeper on a 1v1 for a 3-0 lead.

Just four minutes later, Izac Coleman played a ball to Penton attacking the left side of the box, and Penton had a lovely finish at the far post to secure an incredible first half, five-minute hat trick.

Things would get worse right before the half for the Yellow Jackets, as pressure on a defender led to a pass back to the keeper, who swung and missed for an own goal in under half a minute to go in the half. John Carroll headed into the half with an incredible 5-0 lead over their Cleveland rivals.

The second half would not give better results for the home team, as within the first six minutes of the half, Nicholas Graeca knocked in two goals, both being just 90 seconds apart from each other. A first goal from a flick on past a defender with a rocket of a strike into the top netting, and the second being another lovely move past defenders for a quality finish. The Blue Streaks would take a preeminent 7-0 lead, the word "commanding" being a mere understatement.

Baldwin Wallace scored a consolation goal in the 57th minute courtesy of Max Yakym, but just three minutes later, freshmen Luka Pranjeta took the ball from the goalkeeper and dribbled it into the net to make it 8-1, his third goal contribution in just three games.

The rest of the half yielded rather uneventful results, with John Carroll getting a few chances here and there, but overall nothing much to be noted for.

After an incredible 90 minutes, John Carroll would come away with a statement win with a great moral victory as well.

The Blue Streaks will use this momentum for a massive upcoming match, as the Blue Streaks will be in action in Ada this Saturday to take on Ohio Northern University, kickoff at 1:00 p.m. Wenzler's Warriors stay at the top of the OAC with a 4-0 conference record, Ohio Northern and Otterbein closely behind with 3-0-1 records.

Tonight's OAC results:

(3-0-1) Ohio Northern University 10-1 Heidelberg University (0-4-0)
(4-0-0) John Carroll University 8-1 Baldwin Wallace University (1-2-1)
