Blue Streaks Breathe Confidence with Sweep in Colorado Finale

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A key in adjusting to altitude change is to breathe deeply.

After losing two matches 3-0 in deflating fashion on September 2 to open the Pikes Peak Challenge at Colorado College 6,035 feet above sea level, the John Carroll volleyball team breathed confidence and momentum on day two by defeating Lawrence 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-12) and Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 (30-28, 25-27, 25-19, 25-18) in their Centennial State finale.

Match 1
The Blue Streaks started off strong as they built an 8-4 lead to open the first set.  Then, they proceeded to score nine of the next 10 points to increase their advantage to 17-5, which propelled them to a 25-14 win to take their first set of 2022.

JCU took a 9-2 lead to begin the second set and pushed it to 20-9, but the Vikings did not go down without a fight as they got within five, 24-19 after scoring four straight points.  A bad set capped off the 25-19 win in set two for the Blue Streaks.

Lawrence, who has not finished with a winning record since 2001, could not stop the JCU attack as they found themselves ahead 16-5 in the third.  From there, John Carroll kept its double-digit lead for the remainder of the match and won the final set 25-12.

Cassi Calamunci led the way with nine kills while Kylie Naylor added six for the Vikings.

As a team, JCU hit .298 while Lawrence hit just .011.  The Vikings also committed 22 errors while the Blue Streaks only had eight.

During the match, Ally Bartolone moved into ninth all-time in program history in career service aces (136), passing current Blue Streak assistant coach and four-time First Team All-OAC setter Kit Mladenovic (nee O'Shaughnessy).

Match 2
The first set against Wisconsin-Superior proved to be action-packed, with 14 ties and six lead changes.

Early on, the Blue Streaks and Yellowjackets battled with no team winning by more than two points.

However, JCU pulled ahead 19-16 but allowed Superior to score six straight to take a 22-19 advantage.

With the Yellow Jackets ahead 24-21 and a point away from taking the set, the Blue Streaks stepped up and tied the match up at 24-24 on two Calamunci kills and one from Abigail Kirk.

John Carroll built a 26-25 lead, but could not snuff out the Superior attack as they Yellowjackets tied it up three more times.  The Blue Streaks took advantage of a service error and attack error to close out the set with a 30-28 victory.

Set two proved just as exciting as set one.  After a 5-5 tie, JCU rattled off 15 of the next 21 points to take a 20-12 advantage.  However, the Yellowjackets then scored seven of the next eight to close the gap to two.

John Carroll pushed its lead to three 24-21, but Superior gained its first advantage of the set 25-24 courtesy of four straight kills.  A Jennifer Follmer kill tied it back up, but a service error and kill wrapped up the comeback 27-25 for the Yellowjackets.

Superior rode its momentum into the third by taking a 10-6 advantage to open the period.  However, JCU pushed to within two 15-13, then rattled off seven straight points to take their first lead of the set, 20-15.

After that point, the closest the Yellowjackets made it was four as John Carroll took control and won 25-19.

Much like the third set, Superior built a 10-5 lead early on.  JCU made it 12-10 and scored six straight to make it 15-12 and take the lead for good and won 25-18.

Three Blue Streaks registered double-digit kills, led by Calamunci's 18 followed by Kirk's 11 and Follmer's 10.

With her 25 assists in the match, Bartolone slid into sixth place all-time in program history in that category for a career (2,575) passing Leslie Dissel.

Alexie Pryd had 20 kills for Superior.

JCU will return to University Heights and face Chatham on Wednesday, September 7.  The match is set to begin at 7:00pm.
