Women's Soccer Erupts for 3 Goals to Beat Wooster on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Rain and a late first-half goal by The College of Wooster threatened to spoil Senior Day for the Blue Streaks.

But two goals in rapid succession by freshman Emily Patrzyk and a tally by Madyson Rosado ensured the team's seven seniors and families went home happy.

John Carroll Women's Soccer secured a satisfying 3-1 victory on Sunday to end Homecoming Weekend at Don Shula Stadium.

"It's awesome to get a win on Senior Day," said Head Coach Michael Marich. "I'm very happy with how we stepped up after allowing the late first-half goal. I'm proud of how all of our players responded, especially our seniors. Wooster is a very good team, so this is a nice result for us. We'll be looking to build on this win."

The Blue Streaks celebrated seven seniors on a seasonal fall day: Lauren Gumeny, Claire Hollern, Juliana Kontul, Isabella Merlo, Grace Monnin, Sidney Powell, and Mackenzie Stease. All seven started the match for the Blue & Gold.

In the eighth minute, the Blue Streaks moved ahead on offense. Grace Monnin tallied a shot on goal, but the Fighting Scots were equal to the chance. Monnin threatened again in the 11th minute, but the shot went wide. Lauren Gumeny also fired a shot wide in the 19th minute.

The Blue Streaks kept the pressure up on offense. Madyson Rosado had a shot saved by a Wooster field player in the 27th minute, Emily Patrzyk had a shot blocked in the 29th minute, and Gumeny missed a shot high in the 31st minute.

In the 33rd minute, Monnin fired in a promising shot from the left side, saved by the Wooster's keeper. The ricochet fell to the foot of Rosado, who hit the right post on a rocket shot. Wooster threatened with a chance, but Juliana Kontul did preventative work to stop any chances in the bud.

In the 39th minute, Monnin hit the crossbar with a shot. The Fighting Scots would not miss their chance.

With just 18 seconds left in the half, the Fighting Scots tallied their first shot on net. Wooster sent a pass in from the far right corner of the box towards the crease. The ball bounced off a Wooster player's foot before finding Emma Jaros. The sophomore fired the ball into the right-center portion of the net for the lead.

So, the Fighting Scots carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime with the cloud cover thickening.

But that lead would not stand. It would be a freshman to play the hero on Senior Day as the sun finally started to come out.

In the 48th minute, Grace Monnin fired a free kick into the box. The rocket shot forced the Wooster keeper to dive to her left for a save. The rebound leaked out of her hands, and Emily Patrzyk was there to send it home into the net for the tying goal.

And the Twinsburg native was not done.

The Blue Streaks hurled a throw in towards Patrzyk. The freshman fought for the ball, settled it, then left-footed a laser from the right hash mark just inside the box. The gorgeous shot found a home in the high left corner of the net, and the Blue Streaks suddenly held the lead.

Patrzyk's two goals not just gave JCU a 2-1 lead, but propelled her to the top of the leaderboard in goals for the OAC, tying the lead with seven on the season.

Wooster looked to respond in kind with shots on goal in the 54th and the 56th minutes, but Kontul prevented anything bad from happening.

The Fighting Scots continued to put pressure on the Blue Streaks, but it would be the hosts who'd score next to ice the game.

In the 80th minute, Lauren Gumeny fired in a kick from the right side at about the 25-yard line. Rosado moved with grace towards the net, and met the ball perfectly with her head high center off the tips of the keeper.

And just like that, the Blue Streaks held a commanding 3-1 lead with just under 11 minutes to play.

The Blue Streaks' defense stood strong in the waning moments, and the hosts commemorated Senior Day with a W.

John Carroll returns to action on Wednesday, heading to face Penn State Behrend.
