JCU Gets Back To .500 With Win In Final Non-Conference Match

ERIE, Pa. -- In the final non-conference matchup for the John Carroll women's soccer team, the Blue Streaks prevailed on the road over Penn State-Behrend 2-1.

JCU avenged a 5-1 loss that they suffered to the Lions in 2021, their second worst defeat of the season.  John Carroll also bested Behrend for the first time since 2001, when they were known as Penn State-Erie.

After slow starts from both teams, with only one shot combined in the first 20 minutes of the match, the Lions struck first on a goal scored just outside the box by Karla Ochoa on a pass from Lizzie Hoff.

Less than two minutes later, Emily Patrzyk intercepted a Behrend pass at midfield and passed it up to Madyson Rosado on the break who buried the ball in the lower right corner to knot the score at 1-1.

JCU had a chance to take the lead only three minutes after, but another Rosado shot hit the crossbar.  After the miss, the Blue Streaks managed three more shots in the half.

The action picked up in the second half as Patrzyk looped the ball into the lower left corner from the top of the box just four minutes in to take a 2-1 advantage for JCU.

The Lions put pressure on the Blue Streaks throughout the rest of the match as they took 10 shots combined to JCU's two.  Mackenzie Stease, who relieved Juliana Kontul to start the second half, recorded six saves including three in the final 10 minutes.

For the match, the Lions outshot the Blue Streaks 15-8 including 8-3 on goal.  Patrzyk also scored her eighth goal of the season, joining Jill Commerford in 1999, Julie Scaffidi in 2000, and Bailey Fischer in 2017 as the only players in program history that have scored eight or more times in the first 10 matches of the year.

Additionally, Patrzyk is just three goals away from breaking JCU Hall of Famer Scaffidi's program record for most goals scored by a freshman in a season set in 1997.

John Carroll will start Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday, October 1 as they travel to Wilmington to face the Fighting Quakers.  The match is set to begin at 7:00pm.
