Men's Soccer Scores Twice Late to Beat Oberlin in Season Opener

OBERLIN, Ohio -- For as close as John Carroll and Oberlin are located (44.2 miles, 49 minute drive), the Blue Streaks and Yeomen haven't met often on the pitch in the 21st century.

In fact, tonight marked just the fourth meeting since the turn of the century (15th all-time). Against a solid school from the North Coast Athletic Conference, John Carroll Men's Soccer got the job done.

The Blue Streaks kicked off the 2022 campaign with a 2-0 win at Oberlin on Thursday evening, with Hayden Haffner and Nick Felician providing the firepower.

The victory marked the Blue Streaks' fourth straight season-opening conquest dating back to 2019. Dejan Mladenovic is now 2-0 in season-starting showdowns.

The first half marked without any offense. Jake Vogrin earned his first career start in net. The Medina native stood strong all night in the shutout, making five saves total, including a pair in the first half. The junior made his first career save in the 36th minute.

John Carroll got its first shot on goal in the 17th minute off a Jack Foht chance, followed by a Patrick Koenig shot less than a minute later. Noah Lindon also forced Oberlin to make a save in the 41st minute.

But despite the shots (and yellow cards by both teams), the score stood tied after the first half.

Vogrin made a couple saves early in the second half, and then the Blue Streaks went on the attack. In the 79th minute, the visitors at last broke through. There was a small buildup in the middle, and with time, players came forward. Felician flicked the ball through to Haffner, where the junior was mano a mano with the keeper. Haffner dribbled it around the netminder and tapped it in for JCU's first goal of the 2022 campaign.

With less than 12 minutes to play, the Yeomen needed to press. In Oberlin's eagnerness to respond, the Blue Streaks saw a chance to counterattack with numbers. Haffner took a man on and got past him, getting right outside the 18. In turn, the North Royalton native squared it across to Felician, who took a touch and curved it middle right corner of the net.

Oberlin couldn't respond, and the Blue Streaks held on for the victory.

Felician ushered the offense with the goal and assist. It was a perfect JCU debut after his transfer from nearby Division II Notre Dame College. Haffner played quite well, as he came off the bench for an identical stat line. Also to be commended is Noah Lindon, whose work rate in 52 minutes off the bench was nice. The Blue Streaks will have a quick turnaround now to Saturday.

The Blue Streaks will host the newly dubbed Kenyon Owls on Saturday at 6 pm for the home opener at Don Shula Stadium.
