Women's Lacrosse Revs the Offense in OAC Semifinal Win over Mount Union

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- It was a rainy Wednesday afternoon in University Heights, Ohio, as the John Carroll Women's Lacrosse team defeated the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders 22-14 in the semifinal round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

The game was characterized by the scoring runs of each team, as multiple unanswered goals were tallied in a back and forth fashion.

The 22 goals scored by the Blue Streaks is the most scored against the Purple Raiders in a single game in program history, and it came at the perfect time.

It had been just seven days since the last time these OAC rivals competed against each other in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday, April 27, where the Blue Streaks were the victors of a close 14-10 battle on the road. John Carroll's triumph in Alliance clinched the No. 2 seed going into the tournament, and thus home field advantage in this one.

From the opening draw, the two squads showcased their offensive prowess, with five goals being scored in the first six minutes of the game.

Olivia Gerlach was first to score for John Carroll, as she finished her shot only 39 seconds into the matchup. Lainey Donalson and Alex Heishman each added another goal for the Blue Streaks within the next two minutes.

The visitors started to gain traction with a goal by Sydney Bumbarger, but the Blue & Gold were quick to suffocate the momentum there as they countered with a score by Jenna Ginsberg off of a free position. As the quarter progressed past the halfway point, the score favored the Blue Streaks 4-1 as the offensive rampage was beginning to be controlled by the defenses of both teams.

But just when it looked like the offense was slowing down, four more goals were scored before the end of the quarter, as Gerlach and Shannon Burdick put two balls in the back of the net. The Purple Raiders fired back with two of their own to keep the three goal deficit, 6-3, going into the second.

Mount Union did not back down from the challenge, striking four times in the second quarter, as John Carroll could not find any viable shots on their offensive end.

With the four goals from the visiting team, the score favored the Purple Raiders 7-6 with just over a minute left in the half.

As the clock counted down, the Blue & Gold found the back of the net twice before halftime. Mary Doherty scored off of an assist from Burdick and Gerlach scored with the assist credited to Ginsberg, earning the lead back for the Blue Streaks in critical fashion.

The Blue Streaks got back on track in the third quarter, as Burdick scored her second goal of the game and Gerlach scored her fourth in the first minute and a half, increasing the lead back to three. Doherty scored her second of the game, making the score 11-7 in favor of the home team.

The Blue & Gold pushed ahead to the largest goal differential within another minute of play, as Doherty finished another one in the back of the net and Donalson added her second goal of the game.

John Carroll had scored seven unanswered goals since the end of the second quarter, but that changed after the halfway mark of the third quarter with four Mount Union scores, which cut the lead back down to two.

As the momentum shifted to the Purple Raiders, Carly Ross was able to minimize the damage with a free-position goal with a minute and 19 seconds left in the third. Heishman added another free-position goal to tally the 15th goal for the Blue Streaks with just 30 seconds left in the third quarter.

Going into the final 15 minutes of the game, John Carroll remained in the driver's seat, 15-11.

Mount Union started off hot in the final quarter with a score just 56 seconds into play and another three minutes later. As the game progressed, both offenses started to simmer out until the last couple minutes of the game.

Heishman added one more before the game concluded, but the Purple Raiders countered with another of their own at the seven minute mark. Ross, Burdick (3), Gerlach and Heishman combined for seven goals in the final six minutes as the Blue and Gold were named the victor of this hard fought battle in the OAC Semifinal, 22-14.

Burdick and Gerlach paved the way for John Carroll with five goals each. Heishman added four of her own, also tallying two assists. Ginsberg recorded five assists with a single goal of her own.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Saturday, May 7 in the OAC Championship game as they take on the winner of the Otterbein-Capital. The highest remaining seed will host the championship game.
