Fantastic Run for Women's Lacrosse Concludes in Bexley in OAC Championship Game

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Since the last battle with Capital on April 2, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse had been red-hot.

The Blue Streaks notched seven wins in a row, steamrolling into the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game.

The much-anticipated rematch unfortunately went just like the first.

The Comets handed the Blue Streaks a 22-14 defeat at Bernlohr Stadium, unseating the defending champion Blue Streaks. Capital flew to a hot start, and answered every John Carroll attempt to stay in the game.

The hosts fired out to a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes. As a result, the John Carroll coaching staff elected to burn a timeout early in the contest.

The break helped the Blue Streaks. With 7:48 left in the first, John Carroll got on the board. Mary Doherty tipped in a Carly Ross pass on a pretty play. Less than a minute later, Alex Heishman tallied a nice goal of her own.

Capital responded with a pair of goals, stretching the margin back to three goals, 5-2, with 5:33 left in the period. About 45 seconds later, Jenna Ginsberg found twine off a Ross assist.

But the Comets' high-paced offense would not rest. Capital scored a free position goal at 1:44 of the quarter. The Comets took the 6-3 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter proved to be a physical affair. The offenses became stuck in the mud until the midway point of the period, when the Blue Streaks finally found twine. Olivia Gerlach got open and Shannon Burdick found her. Capital responded again, though, pushing the margin back to three goals.

The Comets managed to hold JCU's offense at bay from there. Capital added two more goals in the next few minutes, stretching the lead to 9-4.

With 17 seconds left, Alex Heishman scored a breakaway goal. But the Comets retaliated with two seconds to play in the half. So heading into the break, the Blue Streaks faced a steep 10-5 hill to climb.

The Comets came out of the halftime break strong. Capital added to the lead with two rapid-fire goals, leading to a change in net, as JCU turned to Livy Munding.

With a 13-5 deficit, the Blue Streaks fired up the offense. Shannon Burdick got the JCU offense going with an assist from Ross at the 11-minute mark. Just 22 seconds later, Olivia Gerlach got one of her own. But Capital again responded quickly, pushing the lead to 14-7.

Gerlach got the goal back with 8:40 left in the third quarter, tallying it off a free-position shot. Ginsberg also tallied a free-position goal, and Heishman notched a goal off a Ginsberg assist. But the Comets offense did not slow down, maintaining a lead with timely tallies. Trailing 17-10 with 1:36 to go in the third, JCU called a timeout.

The Comets remained ahead by seven heading into the break. In the final 15 minutes of the game, the Comets kept up the pressure, assuring that the Blue Streaks would not get a repeat. Heishman and Ginsberg stayed busy on offense, scoring several goals in the final minutes of the 2022 campaign.

Alex Heishman anchored the offensive effort with an outstanding 6 goals in her final game in a JCU uniform, tying her career-high goal total. Ginsberg was also excellent with 3 goals and 2 assists. Gerlach also tabbed a hat trick. Meghan Weiner and Heishman led the way with 4 groundballs apiece. Gerlach tabbed a team-high 3 caused turnovers. Doherty topped the team with 12 draw controls.

The championship represents the first in Capital women's lacrosse history.

With the defeat, John Carroll ends the season at 10-6, barring an NCAA postseason bid.
