Women's Lacrosse Earns Massive Win over Raiders, Taking No. 2 Seed in OAC Tourney

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- With the opportunity to take the No. 2 seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, both John Carroll and Mount Union were fighting for the win.

Despite being on the road, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse locked up the spot during their regular-season finale against the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders.

The Blue Streaks started off strong and continued to outscore the Raiders through four quarters, with a final score of 14-10.

The Blue Streaks struck first, with junior Shannon Burdick scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the game. Carly Ross got the assist on both goals.

After a bounce pass went into the net to extend the JCU lead to 3-1, Ross scored her own goal. Goalie Ava Welchans made four saves for a strong John Carroll start in the first quarter.

Burdick started strong in the second quarter as well, scoring her third goal of the game just 33 seconds into the quarter on a free position. Olivia Gerlach joined her in adding to the Blue Streak advantage with an assist from Jenna Ginsberg, widening the lead to 6-1.

The Purple Raiders scored halfway through the second quarter, but another free position gave Ross the opportunity to score her second goal of the night, making the score 7-2 at the end of the second quarter.

Mount Union started strong in the third quarter in an attempt to cut JCU's lead. The Burdick-Ross duo answered back, though, to maintain a five-goal lead at 8-3.

The third quarter had plenty of back-and-forth action. The Raiders again attempted to chip away at the Blue Streaks' lead, but another goal by Gerlach established a 9-4 lead.

Ginsberg scored a goal of her own with an assist from Alex Heishman, but not without an answer from the Raiders shortly after. Gerlach's third goal put the Blue Streaks up 11-5. The Raiders scored the last goal of the quarter, making the score 11-6.

Ginsberg started the fourth quarter with her fourth goal with an assist by Ross. An unassisted tally by Gerlach furthered the JCU lead to 13-6. The Raiders attempted a comeback with two quick goals, but a free position goal by Heishman helped keep the lead at 14-8. Two more goals by Mount Union kept the game close, but the Blue Streaks stayed ahead.

Gerlach and Burdick stirred the pot on offense with 4 goals apiece. Ginsberg topped the team with 6 points, while Ross notched 5 points. Meghan Weiner anchored the defense with a team-high 3 groundballs and 3 caused turnovers. Ava Welchans got the win in cage, tabbing 7 saves in 60 minutes.

By taking the No. 2 seed, the Blue Streaks will have a first-round bye. John Carroll will host the winner of the OAC Quarterfinal, which pits the #3 seed vs. the #6 seed. The OAC Semifinal is set for Wednesday, May 4 at 4 pm.
