Softball Stays Above .500 with Road Split Against the Pioneers

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Following a close game one loss to Marietta, the John Carroll University Softball team showed resilience, as they defeated Marietta in game two of the doubleheader.

The Blue Streaks came up just short in game one, as a three-run sixth inning propelled Marietta to a 6-4 win in the opener. Yet, they did not hang their heads as they responded with a 5-3 victory in game two to split the Saturday twinbill.

Game 1

John Carroll jumped out to an early lead in game one of the doubleheader. Crista Nativio got the offense rolling via a run-scoring groundout, allowing Gracie Bressoud to score. Kristen Jesberger followed it up with an RBI groundout of her own, allowing Kasyn Scarantine to score, giving the Blue Streaks a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning for the Blue Streaks, Marietta got the offense rolling with a couple of solo home runs by Paige Adams and Jillian Middleton to bring the tally to 2-2.

A sacrifice fly by Jess Brown in the bottom of the third inning gave the Pioneers a 3-2 advantage.

The fourth inning brought much of the same for the Blue Streaks as they struggled to muster any runs. Brianna Callow was a bright spot for John Carroll as she delivered five strikeouts while only surrendering three earned runs through six innings pitched.

The Blue & Gold ended their scoring drought courtesy of a Kendall Trunzo double, allowing Tora Tora Walters to cross home. Trunzo would cash a run of her own following a fielding error by the Pioneers, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of the Blue Streaks.

The play of the game occurred in the bottom of the sixth when Marietta's Jillian Strecansky doubled to left center, allowing three Pioneers to score to bring the score to 6-4.

The three-run double would prove to be too much for the Blue Streaks, as they fell to Marietta 6-4 in the opener

Game 2

The second contest had a nearly identical start to game one. Crista Nativio had yet another RBI groundout, allowing Gracie Bressoud to score to give the Blue Streaks a 1-0 lead after one inning.

More scoring came in the top of the third, as a Pioneer error allowed for Scarantine to advance to third while Alyssa Carmichael advanced home. Trunzo carried over her strong offensive performance in game two as she singled to right field for an RBI double allowing Nativio and Scarantine to score to give the Blue Streaks a 4-0 lead.

The scoring continued in the fifth, as Kaylyn Odelli capitalized off of a Pioneer throwing error to increase John Carroll's lead to 5-0.

Meanwhile, John Carroll's Danielle Orendi picked up where Callow left off in game one as she yielded just six hits and four walks against 24 Marietta batters in seven innings pitched.

Marietta finally got the offense going in the bottom of the fifth, as a sacrifice fly from Jess Brown allowed Taylor Watts to score. Moments later, a wild pitch brought Kylie Daughtery home to bring the score to 5-2.

The Pioneers earned one more run in the sixth but couldn't complete the comeback as they fell to the Blue Streaks 5-3 in game two.

With the split today, John Carroll is back over .500 with a 13-12-2 record and a 6-7-1 record in OAC play.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Ada, Ohio to take on Ohio Northern in a doubleheader on Monday, April 25 with first pitch at 3 p.m.
