Polar Bears Hush Softball's Bats, Eliminating JCU from Postseason Contention

ADA, Ohio -- After many reschedules, John Carroll and Ohio Northern at last met on the softball field on Friday afternoon in Ada.

The Polar Bears made it clear why they stand atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings on their home turf on Friday.

The Polar Bears chilled the Blue Streak bats, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard. Ohio Northern put together a pair of dominant, run-rule victories by scores of 9-0 and 10-0. ONU notched a no-hitter in the second game.

With the two losses, John Carroll is eliminated from contention for the OAC Tournament, dropping to 13-14-2 overall, 6-9-1 in OAC play.

Game 1
Danielle Orendi started out strong in the circle for the Blue Streaks in the opening game. The sophomore started out strong, keeping the Polar Bears off the scoreboard through three innings.

In the fourth inning, the Ohio Northern bats came alive. The Polar Bears got going with 4 runs in the bottom of the frame. Ohio Northern then added three more runs in the fifth, rocketing ahead, 7-0.

Katie DeBord entered for JCU in the fifth, ending the damage. But the Polar Bears kept it up, tallying two more runs in the sixth. Ashley Lenser prevented any JCU comeback effort, finishing off the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll managed just two hits for the game, both by Alyssia Carmichael.

Game 2
The Polar Bears managed to keep John Carroll hitless in the second contest. And after a slow start at the dish, the Polar Bears roared in the third.

The hosts got on the board in the third innings, plating three runs, all three unearned due an error. But the real damage came in the fourth inning.

The Polar Bears opened with a walk, and then JCU made a crucial error. Brianna Callow got the next two batters to strike out, but the error would still prove costly. Two doubles and two homers provided the clout for a 7-run inning, all unearned.

The Blue Streaks went down in order in the fifth, allowing the Polar Bears to preserve their perch atop the OAC standings.

John Carroll will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, hosting the Otterbein Cardinals on Senior Day.
