Women's Lacrosse Bests Cardinals on Wednesday at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After rainy conditions earlier in the week, the clear skies opened up for the John Carroll women's lacrosse team as they defeated Otterbein 16-12.

The Cardinals, who played with no substitutes throughout the game, started off hot as Riley Smith found the back of the net just over 60 seconds into the contest. JCU answered less than a minute later with a Jenna Ginsberg goal to even the score.

After both teams traded goals, Otterbein added two scores from Emily Willms, one of which was short-handed, to make the advantage 4-2 after the first.

Alex Heishman found the back of the net at the beginning of the second to bring the deficit within one for JCU. Two minutes later, Olivia Hanulak added a goal to tie the game at 4-4.

Otterbein then went on to score four straight until Heishman was able to find twine with 1:15 remaining in the second to stop the bleeding and make it 8-5 at the half.

John Carroll came out hot to start the third, as they got two quick goals from Olivia Gerlach and Mary Doherty to shrink the Cardinal lead to 8-7.

A second yellow card by Macy Buchanan in the third period forced the Cardinals to play shorthanded for the remainder of the game. After an injury minutes later, Otterbein was only able to play with 10 players the rest of the way.

John Carroll took advantage with a Carly Ross goal to tie the game, 8-8. Gerlach added her second goal shortly after to grab their first lead in the contest.

Two more goals brought the rally to seven straight for the Blue Streaks, which extended their lead 11-8.

However, Otterbein did not go down lightly, as Emily Wilms tallied a pair of goals to finish off the third period down 11-10.

John Carroll came out firing to start the fourth with four straight goals, which made the score 15-10.

Otterbein continued to fight as they scored two of the game's final three goals, but the Blue Streaks held strong to start off OAC play with two consecutive wins.

Ross, Doherty, and Heishman each scored four goals for JCU while Willms added a game-high six for the Cardinals.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Bexley to take on the undefeated Capital Comets on Saturday, April 2nd at 1:00 p.m.
