Women's Lacrosse Falls to Capital in First OAC Loss of the Season

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Facing off with a stout Capital University team on the road, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse lost a tough one.

The Blue Streaks lost to the Comets, 18-8, at Bernlohr Stadium, in a physical affair.

With the defeat, the Blue Streaks dropped to 3-5 overall, 2-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Comets opened the contest on a hot streak. The hosts fired out to a 4-0 lead, as Grace Osborn rocketed Capital ahead. Caylin Perryman notched JCU's first goal of the game with 13 seconds left in the first period, with a Jenna Ginsberg assist. At the end of the opening frame, John Carroll trailed, 4-1.

Capital opened the quarter with a goal, but Olivia Gerlach responded quickly with a woman-up goal, thanks in part to a Shannon Burdick assist. Capital then rattled off three goals in a row.

John Carroll managed a pair of goals in response, one via a woman-up goal by Gerlach (Alex Heishman assist) and one by a Ginsberg free-position goal. But the Comets got the final tally of the half, so they headed into the break with a 9-4 lead.

The third quarter was a defensive, physical affair. Ginsberg opened the period with a woman-up goal, getting help from Burdick. Capital then answered to advance the lead to 11-5. Thankfully, Perryman scored off a Gerlach assist to narrow the margin to five goals entering the fourth.

The Comets added to the lead, but then Gerlach found an answer, combining again with Ginsberg. Unfortunately, there would be no comeback, as a Capital run assured that the Blue Streaks would drop to the Comets.

John Carroll will host Heidelberg at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday for a special Morgan's Message game.
