Women's Lacrosse Opens OAC Play with Win over Marietta on a Snowy Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A snowy day led to an unusual game at Don Shula Stadium on Saturday. But despite the snow and cold, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse prevailed.

Despite Marietta jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead, John Carroll's offense took control with eight unanswered goals and never looked back.

The game's opening quarter proved successful for the Blue Streaks as their dominant offense set the pace for a 16-5 victory over the Marietta College Pioneers.

The snowy Saturday matinee contest was a team victory for John Carroll as eight Blue Streaks found the back of the cage.

Due to the weather conditions, the Blue Streaks and Pioneers agreed to play only three quarters of the game.

The star in the match was Alex Heishman, who led the team in goals with five.

After Marietta went up 1-0 in the opening 45 seconds, John Carroll wasted no time responding to put them ahead of the Pioneers. At the 13:55 mark of the game, Heishman kicked off John Carroll's scoring campaign.

John Carroll's eight unanswered goals came courtesy of a pair of goals from Heishman, Shannon Burdick and Olivia Gerlach. Olivia Hanulak and Caylin Perryman's individual goals also added to John Carroll's scoring success in the first quarter.

After Perryman's goal, Marietta took a timeout at the 6:23 mark. A little over two minutes out of the timeout, Marietta silenced John Carroll's scoring streak as Natalie Cocco scored for the first time in 10 minutes.

It wasn't long until the Blue Streaks struck again, via Burdick capturing a hat trick. Seconds before the end of the quarter, Lainey Donalson found the cage via a transition goal.

After the first quarter, John Carroll controlled a 10-2 lead.

The scoring spree continued for John Carroll as Ginsberg scored her first goal of the contest. At the 9:23 mark, Heishman notched her second hat trick of the season, pushing John Carroll ahead 12-3.

Heishman's impressive performance didn't stop there as she led the team in goals with four in the first half. Going into the quick halftime, John Carroll led the Pioneers 13-4.

The third and final quarter of the game was John Carroll's slowest start, as they did not score until the 11:01 mark. Ellie Fleischer scored her first collegiate goal and the first of the third quarter for the Blue Streaks.

Heishman found the cage for the fifth time of the afternoon, giving John Carroll a 10-goal lead, their biggest of the game.

Gerlach closed out the victory for John Carroll, being the third Blue Streak to secure a hat trick during the afternoon.

John Carroll outshot the Pioneers, 29-7, and caused 11 turnovers.

Maddie Munding and Livy Munding both shared time in the net for John Carroll. Livy Munding saved two shots on the day.

With the win, John Carroll improves to 2-4 and 1-0 in OAC play.

The Blue & Gold will continue their home stretch as they return to action on Wednesday, March 30. The conference contest against Otterbein University will be at 7 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium.
