Women's Lacrosse Falls at Nationally-Ranked #19 Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- After earning their first win of the season last Wednesday at Oberlin, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse hoped to keep the momentum going as they traveled to Granville on March 23 to take on the No. 19 Denison Big Red at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

Despite JCU's best efforts, the strong challenge from the nationally-ranked Big Red proved to be too much as the Blue Streaks fell, 14-5.

JCU opened the game with a strong first four minutes of defense until the Big Red tallied two goals.

However, Olivia Hanulak responded with consecutive goals in a 20-second span to tie the game, with the second score coming off a timely Lainey Donalson pass.

Nevertheless, Denison ended the final eight minutes of the quarter on a 4-0 run; making the score 6-2 through 15 minutes.

The Big Red continued their run through most of the second quarter. Despite some stingy Blue & Gold defense, Denison rattled off another string of four goals to go up 10-2.

But with less than 30 seconds left in the first half, Carly Ross ended the first 30 minutes on a high note with a goal to make the score 10-3 through one half of play.

The third quarter proved to be back-and-forth and showed an even result on the scoreboard for the period.

Shannon Burdick added a goal about 45 seconds into the second half, then Denison responded with a score.

Burdick answered right back with another goal, but the Big Red once again found the back of the net to make it 12-5 through three quarters.

Then, Denison scored twice in the opening three minutes of the final quarter to make it 14-5. The remainder of the game was a defensive stalemate.

The Blue & Gold were led in the scorebook by Burdick and Gerlach who each had two goals. Gerlach added a team-best 2 caused turnovers plus 3 draw controls. Doherty tallied 5 draw controls and Meghan Weiner tabbed 3 groundballs.

JCU falls to 1-4, but opens Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 26 as they host Marietta at 1 pm.
